The Truth=The Increasingly Bearable Lightness of Being

Pastor Lutzer has written a masterpiece on what it takes to be a true Christian. Often throughout the chapters, Lutzer refers to the opposing directions we must choose between: either continue to live in sin and thus enter further into darkness and despair or opt to change course and enter God's light and discover His very best.
Throughout the book, Lutzer does not offer senseless pop psychology frills. He instead gives accounts of what some have had to go through in order to repent of their past mistakes; among these testimonies are recollections of the peace that many reformed Christians are now experiencing, thanks to their ability to trust God enough to admit to others the ugly truths about their pasts and present situations and ,in result, come into the light.
Lutzer points out the consequences of our choices. He says that if you want to experience the joy of being a Christian, you may have to admit some very painful truths that you are ashamed of. He goes on to express that if for the sake of God telling the truth or just being honest is squeamish, it is not going to be so painful in the long run in comparison to what we will otherwise endure.

One of the best books in a long time

I've not only read the book, but I was part of the worshipping congregation at Moody Memorial Church in Chicago when this sermon series was preached in the Fall of 2000.
Pastor Lutzer is at his all-time best when he is preaching God's Word, and addressing the "issues" of humanity. That is what happens in "Why Good People Do Bad Things." Probably my favorite chapters are "Hearing Your Father's Voice" and "The Roots of Rage."
Profoundly simple, but very much directly-to-the-point, Pastor Erwin W. Lutzer pulls no "punches" and doesn't offer any simple fly-by-night solutions. What he does accomplish is an examination of many of today's ills among believers from a biblical perspective. That, in itself, is a refreshing change from the postmodern christianity that is plaguing so many Protestant congregations these days.

Helpful Advice and Encouragement from Dr. James Dobson

As a new mom, I get a lot of helpful advice and encouragement from reading books about child-rearing. One of the best-known Christian authors on the subject of child-rearing is Dr. James Dobson. Parenting Isn't For Cowards: Dealing Confidently with the Frustrations of Child-Rearing was written in 1987,and based on a study of more than 35,000 parents. I recently enjoyed Bringing Up Boys by Dr. Dobson, and I also enjoyed this study that focused on the differences in parenting the strong-willed child and the compliant child.

Although the times have changed in the last 25 years since this book was published, the message of the book remains the same: parents have unnecessarily burdened themselves with guilt, fear, and self-doubt. This book is dedicated to the mothers of the world, in hopes of making their task a little less difficult. I found that even though this book is written to parents of children in all stages of life, I especially enjoyed chapters 6-8 which address the parents of young children. Even if you do not have any children, I think you can appreciate the opportunity to view the family from the perspective of the parent or the child.

An inspiration to the believer and the unbeliever

Charles Swindoll traces the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in his book, The Darkness and the Dawn. He goes into detail about the events leading up to the crucifixion and the hypocrisy of the trials which convicted Jesus. He then describes what a crucifixion was truly like and explains the 7 last words of Christ and their significance to believers. The second half of the book, title "The Dawn" describes the ramifications of Christ's sacrifice and what it means to those who accept it as truth. This is a convincing book for unbelievers and a good lesson for believers.

Originally published in 1858, The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table is a series of personal essays ostensibly recounting the boarding-house breakfast-table conversation of ³the Autocrat² and his table-mates ‹ the Professor, the Landlady, the Schoolmistress, the Divinity Student, and so on. The book is both a timeless depiction of a witty, urbane, and genial critical intelligence, and a vivid record of 19th-century America in general, and Boston intellectual circles in particular.

About the Author
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935) served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court and as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was nick-named the "Great Dissenter" because of his many dissenting opinions. Holmes is also the author of Kent's Commentaries on the Law (1873) and "The Path of the Law" (1897).

Glad to see this back in print ...

The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table is a demonstration of New England civility in the 1850s. I believe it went through more than 50 editions by the end of the nineteenth century, so it must have been very widely read at one time. The book is packed with amazing observations. Holmes takes the time to wonder why the sense of smell is the quickest path to memory. He rails against puns in a way that is better than punning. He points out human flaws and praises examples of good living. Trees come alive, through prosaic description and poetic flights. Would you like to go back to the 1850s and have a conversation with a Boston intellectual? Here's your chance. There are many old copies of this book sitting around, but it's nice that it's come back into print (again).... (it's also a quiet love story, by the way)

Two oral practices flourished in antebellum America: the lecture (or sermon) and the conversation. Lectures, such as Emerson's "The American Scholar" and sermons, such as the abolitionist sermons of Henry Ward Beecher, are well-known examples of this era. But it was also known as the Golden Age of Conversation, and its greatest practitioner was generally agreed to be Oliver Wendell Holmes, Senior.
Holmes was considered an important American writer until the 1920s when he was excised from the American canon by the modernists. They depicted him as willfully provincial, and elitist. What those critics failed to understand was that the Autocrat is also a comic pose, and that Holmes is making sport of everyone, including elitists. Holmes' democratic view of conversation as an open, free-wheeling discourse where anyone could join the Autocrat at his table, as long as they enlivened the conversation, ran counter to the views of his more elitist friends in Boston's Saturday Club in Boston. Holmes loved to talk, and his love for talk made him a democrat, or perhaps a true republican.
His Autocrat is a many sided character: stern and foolish, admonitory and celebratory, a polymorph who will don any temporaty mask necessary to keep the conversation alive. Holmes' playful metaphorical imagination is also a revelation. His gift for translating complex ideas into homey metaphors, aphorisms, and similes is nothing short of miraculous. In the words of another seriously comic American whom I'm sure Holmes would have delighted in, the Autocrat "floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee."
The Autocrat of the Breakfast table begins "in media res," in the middle of a conversation, with the Autocrat attempting to set the rules for conversation at his table. They are generous rules, but even they are open to sabotage by his tablemates at the boarding house. He begins by banning "facts" from his table as impediments to conversation, (a condition that should prevail on today's too numerous current event talking head shows. But I, like the Autocrat, digress).
Here's how the Autocrat starts: "I was just going to say, when I was interrupted, that one of the many ways of classifying minds is under the head of arithmetical and algebraical intellects. All economical and practical wisdom is an extension of the following arithmetical formula: 2 + 2 = 4. Every philosophical proposition has the more general character of the expression a + b = c. We are mere operatives, empirics, and egoists, until we learn to think in letters instead of figures." "They all stared. There is a divinity student lately come among us to whom I commonly address remarks like this. "
In other words, as Gibian says in his marvelous OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES AND THE CULTURE OF CONVERSATION: [The Autocrat] only asks us to study his beliefs the way a pragmatist would study the doctrines of any religion: "I don't want you to believe anything I say; I only want you to to try to see what makes me believe it." How refreshing in this age of factoids and statisticoids recited with rancor and ideological certitude, to hear the Autocrat and his tablemates at the boarding house attempting to fashion a democracy through and by their conversation. Nowadays all we have are the unironic Autocrats, control freaks like John McLaughlin, Ted Koppel, Rush Limbaugh, and that guy on FOX whose name I have, pleasantly, forgotten.
Listening to the Autocrat you can almost hear American singing. It's not exactly Walt Whitman's America, but it's still America in the hopeful, experimental antebellum era, and thus a good antidote to the cold technocratic chatter and lukewarm public relations cant we are showered with in this hypermediated century.

Astounding that this book is out of print....

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Fun, straightforward and attainable for little ones

This book is complete - the notes have corresponding letters in them and which finger to use (1-5) underneath.
Colorful happy pictures are on each page as is intermediate / advanced lined music for accompaniment. Melodies are short and recognizable - early learners get near immediate positive feedback for their efforts. Ages 4+

Pre-Reading Christmas Party

After just 2 months of lessons using your Primer A piano book for young beginners, my 6 year old grandson used your piano Christmas Party for Pre-Readers to play with his cousins in a home band Christmas Eve on a keyboard. They of course accompanied him at his level. He loved it. Your piano books give them immediate success playing songs which motivates them to keep going and gives them the love of music. I am teaching my grandson and am learning piano along with him. Great books!

I have used this Christmas Party before and liked it, this book was sent as a used book in "very good" condition. Half of the songs were written on in dark pencil and crayon rendering this book unusable. I won't be buying any more used music from Amazon.

Excellent reading, especially if you are planning on going into the Emergencey Management Field. This book covers past terrorist events and provides a great understanding of what products are out there that can easilly be used by furture terrorist.

This excellent book is a must have in the last few months before Radiology specialist exams!!
The hundreds of pictures include excellent examples of almost any case you could be shown in oral exams in gastroenterological imaging, and and big enough to be of useful viewing quality.
The text is succinct but factual and keeps you engaged enough to read the entire book in a few days.

If your exams are looming, it would take only a few weeks to become intimately knowledgable on the contents of this book, and assure yourself of confidence in the exam room. I'm so glad I spent the money!!!!

Only text you need for boards

This is a great review book. It seems lengthy at around 700 pages, but is actually a very pleasant and quick read. This is all that you need for boards, meaning if you know this book for GI you will easily be fine. There is nothing negative that really can be said about this book, from the images to the discussions to the high quality medical illustrations. Excellent review text.

The best single book on the so-called "lordship" debate

This is the follow-up to MacArthur's widely acclaimed first contribution to the debate, "The Gospel According to Jesus" (hereafter TGAJ). This current book seems to present a more careful reflection on the essential aspects of this debate than TGAJ exhibits.
It begins with a helpful primer on the "lordship salvation" controversy, where MacArthur correctly identifies the relationship between repentance and conversion as the single most important issue in this controversy. No-lordship proponents assert that there is no necessary relationship between repentance (defined as purposing to turn from sin) and salvation, while lordship proponents aver that repentance is an essential component of the gospel message (Mk 1:14-15; Lk 24:45; Acts 3:19; 11:18; 20:21; 26:20). The startling implication from the no-lordship conception of conversion in this matter is that a sinner may intellectually believe the facts of the gospel for salvation while concurrently harboring hatred and rebellion against Christ in his/her heart!
MacArthur also discusses the misrepresentation of the debate often made by no-lordship proponents, who frame the debate in terms that make it appear that the debate is ultimately over salvation by grace alone versus salvation by grace plus works (hence their inaccurate characterization of themselves as "free-grace" advocates). What most no-lordship advocates fail to note in their discussion of the debate is that proponents of lordship salvation conceive of God's saving grace as sovereign and dynamic. Proponents of lordship-salvation conceive of God's salvific grace as effecting not only the salvation of a sinner from the consequences of sin, but also from its tyranny and rule in his/her life. They assert that God's grace not only saves, but transforms. Therefore, when God saves a sinner, He not only brings him/her to an intellectual conviction about the saving ministry of Christ, but also to repentance and submission (in varying degrees) to the lordship of Christ. It appears (from the literature coming forth from the no-lordship camp) that they simply do not understand this essential consideration of the debate. Until they demonstrate an awareness of how lordship proponents conceive of God's grace (i.e. as sovereign and dynamic) the debate will continue to flounder and the proponents will continue to speak past one another.
MacArthur also discusses the nature of saving faith, discussing (in chapters 3 and 9) the nature and result of the faith that saves and the character of faith that does not save. No-lordship advocates assert that saving faith is simple intellectual conviction about Jesus Christ as having secured one's eternal destiny (as of late, many no-lordship advocates are even averring that knowledge of Christ's substitutionary work on the cross is not necessary for salvation - consult the Fall 2000 issue of the Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society for documentation). Lordship salvation conceives of saving faith as composed of knowledge (notitia), agreement (assensus), and trust or commitment (fiducia) in the Person of Christ as presented in Scripture. It is evident that the two sides of this debate are diametrically opposed on this essential matter of the character of the faith that saves.
MacArthur also does a nice job in the book as he addresses the other important issues of this debate (e.g., the nature of the new life that has been freed from sin, the so-called "carnal Christian," and the doctrines of assurance and perseverance).
He concludes with an excellent chapter entitled "What Must I do to Be Saved," which really is the ultimate question that this entire debate is centered upon. This is the practical outworking of the debate, and MacArthur demonstrates the important application this debate has to the presentation of the gospel message to sinners. This reviewer ultimately concludes that, from a practical standpoint, the two sides of this debate have two very different religions altogether.
As a final note, the concluding appendices also include helpful material, especially the appendix that demonstrates the historical continuity between current lordship salvation theology, and the soteriology of the Reformation. It is clear that it is the advocates of so-called "lordship salvation" who are the theological heirs of the Reformation.
This is *the* book to own if you are struggling with the "lordship salvation" debate, and I would even recommend it above TGAJ as *the* book to give to someone new to the debate. In addition to this book, I would also recommend Richard Belcher's book, "A Layman's Guide to The Lordship Controversy" and especially Robert Lescelius's book, "Lordship Salvation: Some Crucial Questions and Answers."

NOT Faith and Works, but FAITH THAT WORKS!

Dr MacArthur is NOT adding Faith plus Works, and anyone who thinks he is is missing the point of the book! (By the way, I'll bet that the "reader from Dallas" is a faculty member at Dallas Theological--it takes a Theologian to foul up THAT badly! ) The book is a succinct summation, in layman's terms, of the author's position. While I don't agree with ALL his points, he deserves better than the summary dismissal that the last reviewer gave him.

Mac Rightly Divides the Word of Truth

If ever a book was needed to untangle the complete mess made by so-called "evangelicals" of this day with their "easy-believism" it is this one. Rev. MacArthur so meticulously illustrates the concept of Faith and Works that a person would have to be totally spiritually blind not to see it.
Modern Christendom has been made a joke by the "no-lordship" propensity of popular ministers and this "doctrine of devils" puts in jeopardy anyone who follows its objectives. For as Jesus said, "Why do you call me Lord and do not the things that I say." Faith without works is dead; genuine faith is made manifest, is proven by the works that flow from it.
Dr. MacArthur makes clear that a believer is in no way saved by any meritorious works, but that if a believer is saved "you will know a tree by the fruit it bears."
He takes a bad rap from those who want to make the Gospel of Jesus Christ conform to their ideas, instead of being conformed to the Gospel. But then again does not the Bible say that "all that will live Godly in Christ shall suffer persecution?"

An excellent commentary - but read critically

Lincoln's thought is clear, lucid and intelligible, which helps him explain what can be one of the more convoluted and enigmatic books in the NT. Now, clarity should not be confused with brevity. This is one of the longer commentaries in the Word series on one of the epistles. Lincoln's arguments are finely nuanced and require much of a reader. But in the end, it is worthwhile.
Lincoln rarely engages in sustained polemic against those who hold to positions with which he disagrees, but rather deals with them and offers whatever explanation he favors expeditiously. His knowledge of koine Greek and textual criticism are encyclopedic.
My disagreements with Lincoln are at the presuppositional level, namely that the letter must be deutero-Pauline because of certain linguistic and stylistic features. It seems at times that he wants to ascribe to "the writer" access to Paul's mind, almost as a doppelganger, but thoroughly and consistently rejects Pauline authorship. Lincoln would do well to consider more seriously the role of the amaneuensis in 1st century letter writing, as well as the amount of traditional material the writer employs before rejecting Pauline authorship.
Second, in his discussion of the passage on marriage (5:21-33) Lincoln falls into the hermeneutical sinkhole of postmodern relativism.
On the whole, though, Lincoln is a brilliant scholar whose work on Ephesians deserves every serious NT student's full attention.

Consistent in interpretatians and very good overall

The Word Biblical Commentaries have four sections, outside of the introduction, that carry one through the commentary. The first is the translation section. In this section the author give his own translation of the passage he is about to examine. The is followed by a notes section, which tells why the author chose to translate the way that he did. The next section is comments, which is handled in a verse by verse format. The final section is Explanation and in this section the author ties it all together.
I write as a Classical Pentecostal with a degree in theology. I thought that overall this was a very good commentary. I was not totally sold on the non-Pauline authorship, but I was impressed how the author was ever conscious that he had taken this stand and interpreted the book from the perspective of a generation after Paul. This really took the meaning away from the biographical section of the epistle, because the author has to try to account for and brace up his position throughout the explanation. If, however, Lincoln is correct about the authorship then it does bolster some Pentecostal positions, because such things as apostles and prophets would be shown to carry on after the first generation of apostles have passed on. As attractive as that is to a Pentecostal like myself I still was not sold on non-Pauline authorship. That aside this commentary is reliable and I recommend it especially for those who know Greek. If you do not know Greek then the benefit will not be as great, but there is enough in the comments and explanation section to benefit.

Great Commentary

Lincoln does a great job at clearly bringing out the content of this letter. It is a lengthy read, but overall it's a great commentary. I bought this commentary knowing Lincoln's view of non-pauline authorship, though I did not agree with it, I found it easier to overlook knowing this beforehand. Knowledge of the greek language, even minimal, is also necessary when reading this commentary. Otherwise the reader is not likely to get the fullest benefit from this text.
