He has me thinking...

Campolo is known for his in-your-face, stir-up-evangelicals approach to writing and teaching. So, if you find yourself in the evangelical camp...take a breath. I, as an "evangelical," think that Campolo raises a few concerns here that would be healthy for the evangelical community to consider. I don't agree with everything he says - but for some reason, in the Church we are quick to throw out the baby with the bath water.

I find his approach to issues that are set out in the book as genuine, and heart felt. Some of his other literature and messages have a little more of an edge than this particular book. If anything else, pick it up to get you thinking and considering what you believe and why.

For Campolo fans, I am new in his world of literature...so, I have no real basis by which to compare. I find him incredibly smart and brilliant in the way he lays out his perspective. If you are a fan, I am guessing you will probably read this and think - I have heard this before.

Mostly on Islam: Campolo responds to my email

I have only read the chapter on Islam because that was all I had time to read as I briefly viewed the book. The chapter was extremely disturbing in its inaccuracies and in the transparently obscurantist & apologetic approach Campolo took to the issue. If the other themes in the book were handled with a similar level of academic rigour the book should be considered among the least helpful volumes on contemporary issues and should be treated with great scepticism.

Below is an email I sent to Dr Campolo after reading the chapter:~

"Dear Dr. Campolo,

Having been a fan of yours, having gone out of my way in the past to ... hear you talk and having recommended you to my friends I find your comments on Islam in the above mentioned book extremely troubling.

I am completing an MTh on the subject of dialogue between Evangelical Christianity and Islam and regret to say that your chapter on Islam was extremely unprofessional, I must even go so far as to say it was unethical and outright damaging as regards establishing an informed relationship to Islam.

... Your research seems to have been of the most superficial kind and your readiness to dispense with the very basics of Islam which are widely accepted by Muslims themselves had me, frankly, attributing some ulterior motive to your effort.

To touch on just one point of your departure from the common orthodox Islamic understanding: your statement that the idea that Muhammad married Aisha at the age of 6 found its genesis in a couple of disgruntled ex-Muslims who recently wrote some kind of Islamophobic book is nothing short of asinine. The Bukhari Hadith - one of the two most trusted accounts of the traditions surrounding the life of the Prophet of Islam - states plainly that "The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with Aisha while she was six years old and consumated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. until his death)." Sahih Bukhari Vol. 7, book 62, Hadith 88.

I attach my 13,000 word study on dialogue for your perusal and invite further correspondence."

"Dear Mr. Howarth,

I do not claim to be an authority on the subject of Islam. However, the
information that was set forth in my book, Speaking My Mind, was largely
gleaned from conversations with Karen Armstrong of Oxford University, who is
considered one of the foremost authorities on the subject. Granted that I
was using a secondary source, but I believe her to be a very trustworthy
source. I may be wrong in what I wrote, but I did want you to know the
source of my information.

Thank you for your thoughtful letter. When time permits, I will look
further into this whole matter.

"Dear Dr. Campolo,

Thank you for your reply. Your uncritical reliance on Karen Armstrong
explains everything about the content of the chapter in question. As I
expect this to be our last communication on the matter, I will be brief.

This is very disappointing. Suppose you, as a lecturer, set an assignment
and a student submitted their paper having in their bibliography one single
author. And that the person's work referred to was of the most ahistorical
& jaundiced nature. What mark would you give that assignment?

As an Evangelical there are several stellar Islamicists you could have
chosen to rely on, my fellow Anglicans Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali and Canon
Patrick Sookhdeo to mention only two. The fact that you chose to ignore such
people and focus on perhaps the most prejudiced apologist for Islam we
currently have should be a cause of intense embarassment for an Evangelical
academic. The fact that many thousands of Bible believing Christians will
read your chapter on Islam trusting you give an accurate picture upon which
they can base their relationship both to Islam and to Muslims should have
engendered in you an acute desire to transmit the very best information
available. Apparently it did not.

You said in the book that if Muhammad had in fact married a six-year old
that he would be a paedophile and naturally we should condemn him. I don't
quite agree with that harsh analysis, however, now that you have found this
to be the reality will you now come out and publically state this?

I encourage you to read the works of the authors mentioned above and others
I refer to in my assignment. This is too urgent a matter to remain
uninformed about. There is absolutely no reason why Christians should stop
loving and working for justice for Muslims simply because they have a
realistic idea of the more unpalatable realities of their religion. In fact to continue to
blunder on in the dark will only lead to greater sufferring.

If you are a Christian who is afraid to think, this book may upset you

If you are a Christian who struggles with some of the stances that are taken by the Christian Right, if you squirm a little bit when you hear people say that God is on America's side or when you see people holding signs that say, "God Hates Fags," then you'll probably appreciate this book a lot.

The book is a little uneven in terms of depth, which I would say probably reflects the areas in which Campolo has come to more or less firm positions in his own thinking. The strongest positions are put forth in the chapters on sexism, homosexuality, helping the poor, and militarism. Some of the other chapters, particularly on science and religion and whether there is a second chance for those who die without Christ, seem to just ramble on a bit without really saying much that seems particularly new.

Overall, though, a book that is very much worth reading, even if parts of it make you uncomfortable. I mean, parts of the Bible make you uncomfortable, and you still read that, right?

Excellent book. I second Mr. Hills comments, although I have recently purchased the books based upon comments Mr.Liptak has made in the control mailing list. It is a very good investment. The book is easy to read/understand, covers the full spectrum of instrumentation,give relative costs and companies manufacturing the items. It is a good first book to turn to, and will save me much research time. I wish I would have known about it earlier.

Excellent book for the advanced field technician.

I have used this book for years and it has never failed to provide the information necessary to troubleshoot and repair problems with measurement systems. Liptak does a wonderful job presenting measurement theory and the principles of operation of various measurement strategies. The most helpful information Liptak includes is the discussion of the limitation of various measurement devices. If you are responsible for the maintenance of a wide variety of instruments and you desire to know how those instruments work, this book is worth every penny.

The Very Best Reference - From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control

The book cover almost every single instrument used in the process industry for Process measurement and Analysis of the most common process variables. The book covers Flow, Level, Temperature, Pressure, Density, Safety and Miscellaneous Sensors (Vibration, Shock, acceleration, torque, noise, etc.)

One of the aspect that I find more appealing is that at the beginning of each chapter you find an application and selection oriented overview and an orientation table for the process variable covered in that chapter of the book. The tables list all the different types of sensors and summarize the features and capabilities, as well as approximated prices, accuracies and characteristics of each one. If you need a sensor for a particular application, you can narrow your options and then go to the sections of the book that covers in details the selected sensors.

If you work with Industrial Instrumentation you will find this book to be a very valuable tool in your day to day job, either if you specify, install, maintain or operate them.

This handbook has almost 2000 pages of really useful information.

I have been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. I consider this book to be the very best in the field, and it is really an Excellent reference for anyone and everyone working in these areas or in areas related with their Industrial applications.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

My 6 year old son just started piano lessons using this book. The books are simple to understand and he is doing very well learning from them. I definitly recommend this book for the young beginner!

So easy to learn on for little ones!

My 9 year old daughter just started taking piano lessons last year, so we purchased this Piano for the Young Beginner Primer B paperback book for her. Her piano teacher, who has been playing and teaching the piano for 20 years, highly recommends Bastein books for learning on. This is the only brand we will buy for our daughter since she is learning so easily with them. The book has pretty good illustrations too. These songs are easy for her to master and are helping her grow at a good pace. It took her a couple months to master all the songs. The levels of the book make it easy to figure out which book to buy next.

Perfect for beginners

You are in for a spiritual treat

If you have never read any of Max's books, I urge you to do so. His writing style is easy to read, and you will learn things about God painlessly. I am reading Just Like Jesus and I can't put it down. I am underlining so much and taking notes, what insight! An enjoyable yet informative read. I can't hardly put the book down. Thanks Max for all you do.

I have still not been able to get this book away from my wife long enough to read it. She is VERY impressed with it, and in fact is buying ten more copies to give to friends and loved ones.
We have read several of Max Lucado's books, but this is one of the best (I am told).

The book's copyright is 1989. While parts of this book are outdated especially concerning Satanic Ritual Abuse, the book is still relevant because Satanism still exists & because teens stil have a natural curiousity in the occult. Self education is a must. This book is addressed to parents, schools, & communities. This book offers logical approaches in dealing with the problem of Satanism in today's youth. This book should be read by an adult with a critical eye as this book was written during the time of the Satanic scare where so much information turned out to be fabricated & the result of well orchestrated hoaxes by well respected individuals. Despite this fact, Satanism is on the rise. Teens are drawn to Satanism for many reasons such as drugs, sex, power, anger, rebellion, to shock their parents, to act out aggression, excitement, & money. Dabbling in the occult is addictive, & teens can get in over their heads before they know it. Satanism is destructive to teens' physical, emotional, & spiritual health. Free for all sex leads to the transmission of STDs & AIDS. Satanism leads to violence, & suicide. There is a loss of compassion leading to relationship problems. Drugs & Satanism warp the mind & blurs the line between reality & fantacy, & illusion. The heart is hardened. Satanists feel that they can do whatever they want to or whatever they can get away with. Anything goes. Right is wrong & wrong is right. Teens are often tricked into joining Satanism, blackmailed, brainwashed, threatened, & terrorized into staying in Satanism. Teens often get out of Satanism by committing suicide, hospitalization, or by entering drug & alcohol rehab centers.
The author notes that if the parent feels that there is a problem that he/she needs to go out in the community to investigate how wide spread the problem is. The author gives places to seek information such as libraries, occult bookstores, law enforcement, mental health centers, schools, the humane society, & the media. One person has the power to implement change. Books on the occult especially in lower grades can be removed from the schools. A rational letter to the newspaper editor can be written. If there is an offensive song on the radio, the parent can note the time that it was played & copy the words & then notify the sponsor. The author suggests that if the parent has reason to believe that the child's life is in danger then he/she should search the child's room & make a list of items found & copy a diary if found. The parent should go to a qualified person to see how serious the problem is before he/she even approaches the child. It may be critical that intervention is needed immediately. Threats of suicide are to be taken seriously. Ultimately the choices that the child makes are his/hers & that they are going to be the ones to be answereable. Parents & ministers have got to guide these children & provide some religious instruction to fill the emptiness with something constructive because delving into Satanism is just a search to fill the emptiness with something destructive. It takes a village to raise a child. Public & private agencies who come into contact with a troubled child have got to work together for the good of a child. These children are after all the hope for our future.

Because there's not a zero star rating

This book is pure, 100% grade A baloney. The "signs that your child might be a Satanist" are so broad that they apply to the vast majority of teens everywhere, and the list of supposed "Satanic" symbols in the back of the book is absolutely ludicrous -- watch out for those evil circles!

There are no Satanic verses imbedded in heavy metal records.

So-called "backward masking" doesn't exist.

There is no vast Satanic conspiracy that kidnaps and ritually sacrifices thousands of people every year.

Role-playing games and board games are not "gateway drugs" into Devil-worship and Satanic groups (which don't exist anyway -- see above).

Save your money. Buy Jeffrey Victor's "Satanic Panic" instead and educate yourself with some real facts, not pompous, overblown scare tactics.

Literature for Parents to read..One True Must.

First of all this is A Christian Book that talks about this evil madness known as Satanism and Wiccan magic. This is excellent literature for parents who want to read and know about many past youths who were summoning demons, or actually to be more direct-summoning the Devil. The stories are interesting because they give one [the parent] a glimpse to what most youngsters do in a Satanic ritual[e.g., black mass, eating black waffers, and drinking black wine, October 31(halloween) and having orgies with women occult members. This is knowledge that parents need to know so they can be aware and prevent such madness from ever occurring/entering in the lives of their kids. I believe that Jerry Johnston is a Christian...that is good, and the foreward of the book is written by Journalist Geraldo Rivera. This book is low priced, but the information is so valuable. Topics such as these were talked about on the talk shows back in the 80's but todays movement or beliefs is one of being politically correct that topics such as the Devil are ignored and they should not be. This is a must for the Muslim, Christian, and the Secular parent.Satanism is alive and so is the Devil-this is no fantasy, this is all evil so becareful. Book is highly recommended. And to the review that says heavy metal is not satanic, it is. Most of those members worship the Devil but they just mask their lyrics.

A Good Way to Master Music Theory

It is nearly impossible to find a good music theory workbook for younger students but after years of searching, I finally found the Master Theory series for students from preteens to adults. This series is a 6 book anthology with 30 lessons in each book, covering all the essential elements from beginning theory to advanced harmony and arranging. About the Author
W. Phillip Keller (1920-1997) was born in East Africa and trained in agriculture. He worked as an agricultural development specialist, wildlife photographer and naturalist, and has expressed his love for nature and its God in many bestsellers. Among his best-selling books are A Gardener Looks and the Fruits of the Spirit, Wonder O' the Wind (his autobiography), Lessons from a Sheepdog (also on film and cassette), and A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.

Buyer Beware!

Don't be fooled! This is NOT the original version of the book. It is edited or abridged, but whole paragraphs are left out. The ISBN-13 on this book is 978-0-8499-1765-3, and it is a 2002 copyrighted book from Nelson. I don't know why Nelson would feel the need to "dumb down" an already simple, brief and well-written book, but they did.

If you want the original version, look for copies which were copyrighted in 1983 by Hodder and Stoughton, or Word Books. I'm not sure if there are earlier editions, but if there are, those would be a safe bet as well.

Fantastic Book

I loved this book because it created vision. It was extremely easy to see what the the author was describing. I would recommend this book to everyone and already have to several friends and co-workers. I learned several things, but primarily the value of the relationship between the Sheep Dog and the Shepherd!

Each chapter is suitable for a stand alone reading. Phillip Keller's use of real life illustrations of spiritual truths is a wonderful learning experience.
