The Sermon on the Mount: A Foundation for Understanding, by Robert A. Guelich

This commentary is designated as a critical-historical commentary which deliberately contrasts the more familiar historical-critical commentary which often connotes a school of thought, whereas, the historical-critical sets out to examine the Scriptures "purely historically" without recognizing that the controlling influence of a 19th century positivistic approach to history had polluted their "pure history" from the outset which resulted in an overly skeptical treatment of the Scriptures. Thus, this commentary offers a critical exegesis in that it makes use of the literary and historical critical tools including text, source, form, tradition, redaction, and structural criticism.

An amazing monograph
By Brian Hui
This actually, by academic standards, is a relatively old book (1982). But in all the treatments I've seen, this is still by far the best. Most commentaries on the Sermon on the Mount (SM) basically parrot one another. There are generally accepted "safe" interpretations. Guelich does not feel bound to those safeties. And by the number of times I see Guelich referenced in other scholarly work, I am not the first in that opinion.

This is not a popular work--primarily an exegetical work, although a serious student of the Bible should find it more or less accessible. He deals with the SM verse-by-verse, but also offers literary and thematic analysis that is not atomistic. He deals with the range of interpretations and explains why he holds his interpretation.

If you are studying the SM for your preaching, a Bible study, a research paper, or just for your own benefit as a disciple, this is really an essential companion for understanding. I would not use it as my sole reference (you should never do that for any book), but I would place it within my "inner circle" of trusted resources.

Guelich Carefully Exegetes the Sermon on the Mount
By Stephen W. Hiemstra ﻦ
The Sermon on the Mount is a surprisingly oblique, but self-contained, section in Matthew’s Gospel spanning from chapter 5 through verse 8:1. In the sermon, Jesus presents a kind of ordination service for the Apostles with crowds in the background looking on. What does he tell them? What are his priorities? How are we to interpret what is said?

In his commentary, The Sermon on the Mount, Robert Guelich starts by recognizing the enormity of the task, but lays out his reason for writing with these words:

Yet the absence of an extensive, critical, exegetical commentary in nearly four decades of biblical studies despite the vast literature on the Sermon provides both an opportunity and a need in New Testament (NT) studies (11).

Because NT scholarship is written both in German and English, Guelich’s studies in the U.S., Scotland, and Germany—his doctorate is from the University of Hamburg—suggests he has good preparation to write such a commentary . At the time he wrote, Guelich was a professor of NT at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Guelich’s literature review (14-22) is relatively brief but includes some interesting points. Citing Kissenger, Guelich notes that chapters 5-7 of Matthew are cited more frequently than any other 3 chapters in the Bible in Ante-Nicene writings (14). Augustine was likely the first to refer to Matthew 5-7 as the Sermon on Mount (15). Aquinas distinguishes between “counsels” and “commandments” (advice versus obligation) placing Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon under “counsels” (15). Luther preached a series of sermons on the Sermon focused on “polemics against the papists” (16) while Calvin’s primary interest was on Jesus’ interpretation of law (17). Guelich describes Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Cost of Discipleship as one of the better known treatments of the Sermon which, of course, focused on what disciples should do .

Guelich’s commentary is written in 10 chapters preceded by a brief preface and followed by a bibliography and indices of authors and scriptural passages. The 10 chapters were:

1. Introduction (pages 13-40);
2. The Setting of the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 4:23-5:2; 41-60);
3. The Gospel of the Kingdom (Matt 5:3-12; 62-112);
4. The Role of Discipleships (Matt 5:13-16; 119-131);
5. Jesus and the Law (Matt 5:17-20; 134-170);
6. The Greater Righteousness (Matt 5:21-48; 175-265);
7. On Doing Righteousness (Matt 6:1-18; 272-316);
8. The Life of Prayer (Matt 6:19-7:12; 321-379);
9. The Narrow Gate (Matt 7:13-27; 382-411); and
10. Epilogue (Matt 7:28-29; 414-419).

The Beatitudes, which appear in Matthew 5:3-11, are treated primarily in chapter 3.

Let me turn briefly to the questions that I posed above.

What does Jesus tell them? Guelich (36-39) breaks the sermon into 3 parts: the Beatitudes, admonitions, and warnings. He sees the Beatitudes serving as a theological introduction expanded on in the admonitions and warnings of Matthew 5:17-7:27. Guelich sees the admonitions ending with the Golden rule in Matthew 7:12. The warnings then follow in 7:13-27. Ironically, the Lord’s Prayer appears among the admonitions in Matthew 6 and he sees the prayer providing structure to the remainder of the chapter and the first 12 verses of Matthew 7.

What are Jesus’ priorities? Jesus is addressing the Apostles to inaugurate his vision for discipleship in the new age of the Kingdom of Heaven, summarized especially in Isaiah 61 (37):

“…the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion...” (Isa 61:1-3 ESV)

These priorities are captured in the Beatitudes. They are credible, in part, because they appear almost verbatim in Luke 4:17-20 where Jesus gives his “call” sermon.

How are we to interpret what Jesus said? Guelich describes his interpretation method as “critical, historical” commentary. He writes:

“…this commentary offers a critical exegesis in that it makes use of the literary and historical critical tools include text, source, form, tradition, redaction, and structural criticism”. (23)

Guelich carefully distinguishes 3 sources in Matthew’s Gospel: Q materials appearing in Matthew and Luke; Matthew’s redaction (things attributable only to Matthew); and other NT sources, such as Mark. This careful inventory of sources provides Guelich the ability to infer author intent and other things when discussing particular Gospel writers. He sees the end of the Sermon (Matt 7:28) being borrowed from Mark 1:22 and the prelude to the Sermon (Matt 4:23-5:2) appearing at Mark 1:39 (414-415). This insight places the Sermon early in Jesus’ ministry.

Robert Guelich’s commentary, The Sermon on the Mount, is one of the most carefully written and interesting commentaries that I have ever read. In part 2, I will focus in more depth on particular issues that he raises. Both reviews will appear online (T2Pneuma dot net) after April 1.

Best Trade of Depth vs. Conciseness on Christianity I Have Seen
By Roger K Young
I am a Christian, have been for 40 years, and found this short treatise to be spot-on. It is great as a refresher on the basics, and Max Lucado's illustrations provide fresh insight. This book is also good for anyone who knows little or nothing about Christianity and wants a brief description. It goes into enough depth to be complete without making the reader feel like they stepped straight into grad school.

Beautiful & Powerful!
By Davina M. Martinez
Reading this book was an incredible experience for me and brought me to tears, all with gratitude, for what Jesus out of His love for me and others. Max Lucado has a beautiful and gifted way of presenting the meaning of John 3:16 and provides the vivid descriptions and context, which is helpful to understanding the power of this verse. Prior to reading the book I could say I was familiar with the scripture, hearing it so many times throughout the years, but reading this book provided me with the understanding of what this scripture really means. I encourage anyone who is actively seeking a spiritual relationship experience with Jesus Christ (versus a religious experience) to read this book.

Consistently Excellent Despite Three Authors
By K. R. Sperling
This is a delightful commentary that covers the first 25 chapters of Jeremiah. Considering the unique background of its development, I am happy to be able to say that.

Peter C. Craigie was commissioned to write the WBC Jeremiah commentary. He had written the introduction and finished the commentary up to Chapter 8, verse 3 when he died in a car accident. The WBC editors then commissioned two other OT scholars to finish this volume: Page H. Kelly covered from Chapter 8, verse 4 to the end of Chapter 16, and Joel F. Drinkard finished the volume.

The resulting commentary is excellent and surprisingly consistent. I knew Craigie's part would be good because I had read his NICOT commentary on Deuteronomy and found that to be superb. After I finished Craigie's part, I continued to read where Kelley took over, and not having read anything by him, didn't know what to expect. However, I found it to be a smooth transition: Kelley was as good as Craigie! The same thing occurred when I moved into Chapter 17, where Drinkard took over; another smooth transition and continuing excellent commentary! The three authors and WBC editors did a superb job of producing a high-quality volume under complex conditions.

The preface states that the WBC's "layout, in clearly defined sections, has been consciously devised to assist readers at different levels." For each Biblical passage (usually from a couple to a dozen verses), there is a bibliography, the author's own translation, notes on the Hebrew text, a form/structure/setting section, a comment section, and an explanation. When properly done, this format works quite well, and Craigie, Kelley, and Drinkard all used the format exceptionally well.

The form/structure/setting section provides the technical organization of the passage, the comment section supplies the verse-by-verse exposition, and the explanation gives a summary or popular exposition of the passage. You can say that the form/structure/setting section is the leaves, the comment section is the trees, and the explanation is the forest--together they fully explain the passage.

I like the theological insights in a technical commentary such as the WBC and this volume on Jeremiah provided many. Following are three examples.

Craigie on child-sacrifice in ancient times: "And if we are horrified by the thought of child-sacrifice in the Valley of Hinnom, we need to ask whether it is so fundamentally different, in the taking of young life, from some of the casual forms of abortion that characterize many sectors of modern society." (p. 128).

Kelley on true greatness: "What is the measure of true greatness? The world today honors its scholars, especially those in the scientific field, its soldiers, its wealthy aristocrats, and its entertainers. Jeremiah regarded Israel's fascination with wisdom, power, and wealth as ludicrous and idolatrous. . . . The godly values--love, justice, and righteousness--put the values of wisdom, power, and riches into proper perspective." (p. 154).

Kelley on the sorrow of God: "This passage [Jer. 12:7-17] gives us a rare glimpse into the consternation and anguish that evil causes God. The anguish is especially acute for Him when His own people are responsible for it. . . . It is amazing to think that evil can cause God the same anguish that it causes man." (p. 185f.).

Although all WBC volumes are not equal in quality, I really like the WBC Series as a whole and the ones that I have read were excellent (Genesis by Wenham; Exodus by Durham; 1 Chronicles by Braun; 2 Chronicles by Dillard). Reading this commentary gave me a greater appreciation of Jeremiah and his ministry and a deeper love for God--time and money well spent.

"It [knowing Jesus] will never be enough until my faith becomes sight and I know him as fully as I am known. I find that my yearning for Him is ravenous and it has once again led me to immerse myself in the pages of His Word-in particular, the eyewitness account of His life and ministry that was recorded by the disciple with whom I most identify-John." -Anne Graham Lotz

Long heralded by Billy Graham as the "best preacher in the family," Anne Graham Lotz draws new insights from passages containing Jesus' teachings to his disciples toward the end of his earthly ministry when the disciples were trying to cling to Him most. Anne writes, "I wanted to know what He had to say to those who were desperate for more of Him."

Anne focuses each chapter on a passage from the last half of the book of John and features a corresponding life application. Chapter titles will include… His Voice in My Ears, His Tears on My Face, His Praise on My Lips, His Death in My Life, His Dirt on My Hands, His Hope in My Grief, His Fruit in My Service, His Love in My Home, His Courage in My Convictions, His Nearness in My Loneliness, His Answers to My Prayers, and His Glory on My Knees.

More of His Voice in My Ear
John 10:1-10

God told me to tell you that you are supposed to marry me." I received that astonishing bit of information on a lined sheet of notebook paper that had food stains on it when I was fourteen years of age! It was a personal letter to me from some delusional young man that had been forwarded from my father's organization. I remember writing back rather crisply, "Well, He hasn't told me!"

As amusing as that incident was, a similar attitude was conveyed to me at the beginning of my ministry that was not so humorous. Some church leaders publicly expressed disapproval of my ministry because I was willing to speak when there were men in the audience. And their stand was based on what they said God says.

A typical argument from one of these men was something like this: "God told me that you as a woman are not to speak to an audience in which there are men. God has also told me women are not to be preachers."

My initial reaction was the same as it was when I was fourteen: "Well, God hasn't told me!" But because this argument was made by those with seminary degrees and reputations for being spiritual, by godly men who held positions as shepherds in their congregations, this little sheep needed to hear her Shepherd's voice. I did not want to hear what others said He said. I wanted to hear from Him directly. I wanted to hear His voice in the ears of my spirit.

Do you have a similar dilemma in your life? Have you been confronted with those who, in essence, have said, "God told me to tell you if you only had more faith, you would be healed," or "If God really loved you, that bad thing would not have happened to you," or "It's God's will that your loved one died"? Such "words of knowledge" spoken by sincere people within our circle of Christian friends can put us in a tailspin of emotional devastation and spiritual doubt. It is especially traumatic and confusing when those words are uttered by someone in a position of religious leadership.

How can you and I know which voice speaks the truth and is therefore authentic?

The Bible tells us that God does speak to His children and that we will hear and know His voice even as sheep hear and know the voice of their shepherd.

In Western civilization, the concept of a personal shepherd is relatively meaningless. With hoof-and-mouth disease in the news, we've seen British sheep ranches flashed on the news and sheep pens in Northern Ireland pictured on the front of our morning newspapers. If you live in a rural area, you may have noticed that sheep today graze in carefully fenced-in pastures where they're guarded by specially bred dogs and identified by a number tattooed in their ears. Computers track when they are born and when they are ready for either shearing or slaughter. There is no personal shepherd. Unless the sheep are on a very small farm, even the sheep's owner can't tell one animal from another.

But the Eastern shepherd was, and in many parts of the world still is, very different. He raised his sheep from the time they were lambs and maintained responsibility for them twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, year in and year out, for the sheep's entire lifetime. There were no dogs or fences or tattoos or computers.

The Eastern shepherd of Jesus' day raised his sheep primarily in the Judean uplands. The countryside was rocky, hilly, and creased with deep crevices and ravines. Patches of grass were sparse. So the shepherd had to establish a personal relationship with each sheep, nurturing its love and trust in him in order to lead it to where the path was the smoothest, the grass was the greenest, the water was the cleanest, and the nights were the safest. The shepherd always led the sheep. He knew their names, and when he called them, they recognized his voice, following him like a swarm of little chicks follows the mother hen. When he stopped, the sheep huddled closely around him, pressing against his legs. Their personal relationship with him was based on his voice, which they knew and trusted.

The Bible describes our relationship with Jesus as being similar to the relationship between the Eastern shepherd and his sheep-a relationship based on His voice. And make no mistake about it, His voice is God's Word, the Holy Bible.

The Authentic Voice is Biblical

God speaks primarily through the Scriptures, and at times, through other people-which is where we must be careful. One of the most familiar teachings of Jesus is one He launched into after a confrontation with the "shepherds," or religious leaders, of His day who professed to speak for God. John recorded that the confrontation had taken place after an incident involving one of the many blind beggars in the city.

Jesus had been walking through the congested streets of Jerusalem when His attention was caught by a beggar who had been born blind. Stopping, Jesus had patiently explained to His disciples and to the man that the blindness was the result of no one's fault. Instead, it was an opportunity to reveal the glory of God. The resulting display of God's glory as Jesus created sight in eyes that had never seen before should have caused everyone, including the religious authorities-especially the religious authorities!-to fall at His feet in worship. Instead, it provoked a confrontational exchange between the man and the religious leaders that resulted in the man's excommunication from the temple. Try to enter into the drama of the former blind beggar's experience:

In one day, the former blind man's life had turned upside down and inside out. As he must have wandered in a daze through the narrow, crowded streets, surely he tried to comprehend all he had experienced, realizing that although he had gained his physical sight he had lost any social acceptance he would ever hope to have. Did he wage an almost superhuman battle to force his attention away from all he was seeing for the first time to all the thoughts he was thinking for the first time? And where would he go? Back to the alleyway where he had begged all of his life? Back to his home where his parents resented the disgrace he had brought on the family? Back to his "friends" who had turned him over to the authorities in the first place? Since he had received his sight, not one person had congratulated him or shaken his hand or slapped him on the back or even smiled joy and approval. Having lived in a world of darkness all of his life, surely he had never felt so alone as he did in the light.

Until he heard that familiar voice. It was coming from an ordinary-looking Man standing in front of him-

a Man Who had heard of his excommunication from the temple,
a Man Who knew what it was to be lonely in a crowd,
a Man Who understood what it felt like to be treated like a criminal because of God's presence in His life,
a Man Who would Himself experience being outcast, not just from the temple and the city, but from the human heart-
a Man Who had heard, Who understood, Who loved, and Who had searched until He found the formerly blind beggar to whom He had given sight.

Praise God! Jesus draws near to those who are afflicted and persecuted and criticized and ostracized. Jesus draws near to those who are suffering-especially when the suffering is for His sake.

As the former beggar heard the voice he would never forget, did his heart leap? Did his newly focused eyes cling to the Man's face, drinking in every detail, listening to every syllable, as the Man gently inquired, "Do you believe the Son of Man?" Eagerly the man responded, "Who is he, sir? . . . Tell me so that I may believe in him."

And "Jesus said, 'You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.' Then the man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and he worshiped him" (9:35-38).

Jesus then gave a scathing condemnation of the Pharisees who had stood in judgment over the man and were still hounding him. He declared that the man who had been blind could now see, not only physically, but also spiritually because he recognized Jesus as the Son of God and placed his faith in Him. But the Pharisees, who claimed with all of their religious training and knowledge and experience that they could see spiritually, remained blind because they rejected the truth of Who Jesus is (9:39-41).

The haughty, superpious, elaborately dressed Pharisees who had slipped through the temple courtyard to spy on the beggar caught him in conversation with Jesus. So Jesus used what was inevitably another imminent confrontation with the religious leaders to make a point that I believe needs to resonate in the ears of Christians today. With eyes that surely flashed with righteous indignation, and with the same breath that indicted the religious leaders for their spiritual blindness, Jesus warned His followers that not all religious leaders, or "shepherds," were authentic.

More of "Just Give Me Jesus"
By J. Warren
Anne Graham Lotz is an excellent communicator, both in writing and in person. This sequence to "Just Give Me Jesus" continues to develop her quest to know her Savior better and better. This book is also a study in the Gospel of John. The book doesn't read like a study book though. She uses a number of personal illustrations, which women, in particular, will identify with. Who of us doesn't love a good story? Her fervor and commitment to God are evident in the book, though it is not just a feel-good book. She is also a diligent student and expositor of Biblical truth.

The standard for professional scholars.
By B. Marold
I certainly agree with points made by one reviewer who described these volumes as encyclopaedic "database for specialists", but that is inconsistant with his being doubtful of the usefulness of some sections and their level of detail. He may never had to write an exegesis paper for a graduate level course on a biblical subject. Of course, I am giving away my point of view. That said, I would NEVER recommend this book, or any one of its volumes to the casual reader who wanted to know something about Revelation. I would not even recommend the Word series for pastors. For that, there are lots of really good books, such as Ben Witherington's social commmentary or Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza's feminist leaning commentary, or best of all, Bruce Metzger's "Breaking the Code".

The Word series is for professors who teach in seminaries, and who deal with deep textual and translational problems. This is especially true of Aune's three volumes.That is as long as Nolland's 3 volumes on the Gospel of Luke, which is longer book in the Bible. Part of this may be due to the fact that Revelation may be the most poorly written book in the Greek New Testament. Even as late as Erasmus' 1516 edition of the Greek NT, we did not have good sources for the whole book. Erasmus filled in the gaps by back translating parts from St. Jerome's Latin translation. (These missing Greek pieces have since been found. Jerome did NOT make those parts up.)

I have used several different works in the Word commentary series, alway with some other commentary open at the same time. Almost invariably, the Word contribution is more even handed, more thorough, and more accurate in avoiding far fetched theories about the text. Aune, however, does stray from this standard in a big way with his theory, ably described in Mr. Garrow's review. I will also agree with Mr. Garrow's review of the first volume, and his source, Dr. Richard Bauckham, that unlike the Gospel of John, for example, Revelation is probably the result of a single hand, maybe not all in one sitting, but that would help to explain the atrocious Greek.

Reading Word commentaries can be a bit tedious, but if you are looking for information on an especially detailed matter in the text, this is the place to come. I think library search software may someday replace the Word series, but that time has not yet come.

This is such a welcome addition to commentaries on the book of Revelation
By Steven A. Wallace
Aune has hit a home run with his commentary on Revelation 6-16 in the Word Biblical Commentary series. Exhaustive in treatment of words, excellent in comparison of their use within Revelation, and extensive in offering alternate meanings with their sources, this book is a must for anyone seeking to update their collection of reference books on this last and controversial book of the New Testament.

The wood. The thorns. The nails. Christ's sacrifice has defined the very essence of mankind's faith for the past 2000 years. And now, Max Lucado invites you to examine the cross, contemplate its purpose, and celebrate its significance with He Chose the Nails. With his warm, caring style, Max examines the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion, revealing the claims of the cross and asserting that if they are true, then Christianity itself is true. The supporting evidence either makes the cross the single biggest hoax of all time, or the hope of all humanity.  This is the first stand-alone workbook from Max.

Amazon.com Review
Reading a Max Lucado book is as comfortable as having coffee and conversation with a close friend. He Chose the Nails: What God Did to Win Your Heart is signature Lucado: warm, conversational storytelling blended with scripture, humor, and vulnerability.

Lucado invites us to understand the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion and celebrate the significance of the promises they offer. From the sign in different languages tacked to the cross ("I will speak to you in your language") to the burial clothing ("I can turn your tragedy into triumph"), he speaks of each symbol as a "gift of grace" that reveals God's love for mankind.

Lucado takes us to Calvary and shows us our sins nailed between the hand of Jesus and the cross. "You've made some bad choices in life, haven't you," writes Lucado. "You've chosen the wrong friends, maybe the wrong career, even the wrong spouse. You look back over your life and say, 'If only I could make up for those bad choices.' You can. One good choice for eternity offsets a thousand bad ones on earth. The choice is yours."

Whether he's bantering around phrases like "the hall monitors of holiness" or crafting a deeper expository on the crown of thorns, Lucado neatly balances the task of making his words accessible to a broad audience while delivering a meaty message on God's greatest sacrifice. Pick up this insightful read, and you'll be glad you made the choice. --Cindy Crosby

From Publishers Weekly
Lucado's understated homiletical style has propelled sales of more than 15 million books and made him the first author to win three Gold Medallion awards for Christian Book of the Year (Just Like Jesus, 1999; In the Grip of Grace, 1997; and When God Whispers Your Name, 1995). His loyal following will in no way be disappointed with this latest offering, which focuses on the "gifts" of the cross, including the soldiers' spit, the crown of thorns, the nails, the wine-soaked sponge, the burial garments and Pilate's sign identifying Jesus as the King of the Jews. Each of these tragic objects teaches Christians something about the nature of God, says Lucado. The wine-soaked sponge, for example, offered when Jesus spoke of his thirst while dying on the cross, demonstrates how God through Jesus took on the entire human experience, complete with its suffering. "To take on our sins is one thing, but to take on our sunburns, our sore throats? To experience death, yesDbut to put up with life?" God did this so that his followers would fully trust him, Lucado explains, and know that their pain was understood. Lucado uses good humor and everyday situations (such as coping with road rage) to bring his points home. His skill in highlighting even the smallest detail of the crucifixion scene will prove an epiphany for many readers. (Aug.)

Excellent book!
By leni
As always, another great book by Max Lucado. He captures your attention from the very moment you start reading the first page, or the introduction. Explaining the crucifixion of Christ, His sacrifice, he engages you in a way that you feel like you were there when all of this was happening and, at the same time, you examine with awe His sacrifice and experience the pain, the suffering He went through. Nothing less but to thank the Savior for His extreme love for you. So simple, yet so profound. Amazing reading. Enjoyed every page. Highly recommend this item.

Great study
By Maretha Lacefield
Loved this book. It opens my eyes to slot of things that have deep meaning to a Christian. Our freedoms of belief and worship are being challenged right now of . We have a Lord and Savior that came into this word and it wasn't much different but He changed it. What He suffered you and I can not know because he was our creator and we liked Him are standing for what is right and honorable but we've in a selfish word. It could be so much better if we worshipped and lived as He asks.

Max Lucado is such an easy read. I love the way he words things and how he really makes you think about things in ways you may not have before. I've known the story of the cross for years but why he chose each aspect of that journey for me.

A Wonderful Success
By A Customer
This music book is a success. From Amazing Grace to Russian Sailor's Dance, Standard of Excellence Book 2, has many tunes to help improve your tone quality. This book is also a great choice for middle school level bands that need a book. Being written specifically for more than one instrument, this book has duets and warm ups that can be played as one band. Also, for you French Horn players who know how difficult the instrument can sometimes be, there are the regular songs that can be played as a band, and also the same song but in a different key so that you can start off easily. To top all that off, there are also real band arranged pieces up to over 100 measures long. Now if this isn't a good band book, then I don't know what is!

A Wonderful Testimony
By Jeff Holmes
This book is a blessing to read for everyone but most especially for anyone currently going through any trials in their life. This is a book that when you read it you want to share it with everyone you come in contact with and the list just keeps growing of who should read this! This book is very enjoyable to read and you want to keep reading it. Everyone faces some point int their life when they feel they've come to the end of the road and they just can't go any further but he reminds us that God sees the full view that we can not see and he can tell that it's merely a bend in the road.

Comforting Book!
By A Customer
This book is awesome. I read the book while going through some personal problems related to stress, anxiety and depression. This book brought tremendous comfort to me and reassured me that I was never alone...God was and is always there! Reading about the highs and lows of David and relating it to your everyday life is what David Jeremiah does best. He is an excellent writer and a Godly man. Read it and you won't be disappointed.

An Oasis in Time of Need
By Peggy Morgan
This book was given to me when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I am already looking forward to my second reading. Dr. Jeremiah beautifully weaves personal stories throughout that illustrate in a real way many of the Psalms he includes and writes about. An excellent gift for those of us whose roads are not always straight.
