Excellent Commentary

These two volumes are well worth the cost. Dunn gives an excellent presentation of the background and issues surrounding the book of Romans. While clearly and accurately presenting all options, he presents the case for his own view point. He provides many helpful insights into the flow of thought and argument of the book. We used this text in seminary and it was very helpful.

Outstanding in depth

As a serious "non-scholar" Bible student, I enjoyed using these two volumes when teaching a class on Romans at my church. I think Dunn is considered a leading Roman's scholar and his new perspective slant comes through fairly noticeably in this book. However, he makes a compelling case for his arguments on all issues addressed in Romans. In good scholarly style, he also quotes the opinions of other scholars who hold differing views on those same issues. I can't comment on his accuracy with his expounding of the greek text as I'm uneducated in those matters. However, even with my illiteracy in greek, his comments and interpretations of the original text were illuminating and understandable.

Romans for all, at last!

Professor James Dunn remains unparalleled in Pauline theology. In this commentary, besides the scholarship which is a well-known mark in his works, there is a great sensitivity in the application of each analyzed text. It's my favorite commentary in Romans.

Vintage Swindoll!

Swindoll's book on the Book of Nehemiah is a gem that any leader or potential leader would benefit from!
Among the important points Swindoll covers include:
1. God works through ordinary people and can work through unbelievers.
2. God alone has the power to change a person's heart. Do not try to manipulate others - prayer and waiting are essential.
3. Excellent notes on spending time in solitude before taking action - the leader must think things through before rushing in.
4. Leaders need to develop thick skin and carefully evaluate criticism (where it's coming from, the content of the criticism).
5. Nehemiah refused to be intimidated by others and he gives us encouragement to stand firm when needed.
6. A leader has to know when to make a stand and when to compromise - not everything is worth fighting for!
7. Leaders need to be happy people! The world is looking for positive people who are encouragers - people will flock to this kind of person.
8. Effective leaders have good insights and do not have inflated opinions of themselves.
A highly recommended read!

Leadership in a nut shell

If you think that the book of Nehemiah is just part of Old Testament history, you have missed a lot. Chuck Swindoll's book demonstrates how God can move in the heart of an individual to accomplish His goals. You can also learn a lot about leadership by observing Nehemiah's methods in planning, organizing and motivating a discouraged group of people to accomplish a task. I highly reccomend this book.

Small but mighty!

I've seen feisty Patsy at Women of Faith conferences. You would never guess she was once an agoraphobic. I plan to loan this to my niece's husband, who is a big germaphobe. Maybe he can glean some strength from it. Patsy's story tells us how we must hand our fears to God. We cannot control nearly as much as we think we can. As always, she uses a big dose of humor and scripture to illustrate her points. I plan to read it again soon!

gives hope and inspiration

If you come to this book looking for some kind of structured plan of how Patsy worked through her agoraphobia years you are not going to find it. I understand the want for this being a recovering agoraphobic myself and seeking in the past anything that even held the word agoraphobia and hoping it had the "fix". She actually does give the answer to agoraphobia, but it's not an "easy" one and you will miss so much more in this book if that is all you are looking for. Read deeper and you will find hope and inspiration. You will learn to trust more deeply and lean on God through all things. She shows her spunky side that we all know and love, but she also shows a different side as she talks about areas of pain in her life. I just finished it and am going to read it again since I find things after a second reading that I may have missed through the first one...I can't wait.

A Great Book

This book was Patsy Clairmont's autobiography, where she talks about her family, how she met her husband, her speaking ministry, friendships, and her struggle with agoraphobia, anxiety, and depression. The book was short and to the point. It was a fun little book to read. We see this woman who can get up and speak, yet, she comes through as a real person like you and me, someone we can all relate to. And her, describing her struggles with anxiety and agoraphobia, makes her all the more real. She lets us know that even though she was a Christian at the time, this did happen to her. The stories about her family, particularly her oldest son, were very amusing.

An Excellent Work on Pastoral Theology

Despite the previous review of this book, I recommend it to all. Dr. MacArthur, and The Master's Seminary Faculty has done a great service to pastor's everywhere.
First, the book is comprehensive. It deals with as many issues pertaining to pastoral leadership that you can shake a stick at. It ranges from the pastor and his study, to the pastor and congregational prayer, and everything in between.
Second, just because a book advocates a particular theological position (especially since it is based on Scripture) does not make it wrong. MacArthur and company do an excellent job advocating their position, and this reviewer agrees whole-heartedly. As a pastor myself, I understand the pressure that is put on us to be examples and leaders. Scripture says to not be a teacher if you do not have to be because they will be judged harsher. If that does not illustrate the extremely difficult position of being a pastor then I do not know what does. MacArthur does not advocate perfection in the pastorate. He knows as well as I that that is impossible on this side of heaven. What he does advocate is "above reproach" pastoring, which is clearly seen in 1 Timothy. As for the women issue... there is not room to deal with that issue here. It is more complex than the other reviewer is letting on. As for this reviewer, I accept the complementarian approach and think that MacArthur and company do a good job at advocating it.
There are issues I have with this book. It's more "elder rule" type governing system (especially dividing teaching and ruling elders), has a great deal of Scripture to deal with before one can see it as the biblical approach.
All in all though, this is an excellent book. I recommend it to all who are interested in accomplishing biblical pastoral leadership. It should probably be supplemented by other volumes, including Joseph M. Stowell's "Shepherding the Church" and John Armstrong's "Reforming Pastoral Ministry."

A good book

John MacArthur and company lay down the foundation for the pastoral office covering the biblical requirements and duties the office is to perform. The book offers examples of pastoral theology throughout (many of which made it into my notes) and is written in a non-technical fashion. The book, as with Oden's Pastoral Theology, is geared for those who are looking to enter the teaching office. Of importance is a chapter devoted to scaring off those who are not truly called to fulfill the teaching office. This I truly feel is of great importance and something which another book, Biblical Eldership (Alexander Strauch, 1995), also dwells upon but Oden's Pastoral Theology fails to drive home with enthusiasm. Unfortunately Rediscovering Pastoral Ministry does not dwell long upon the idea that a good pastor can do, or teach, good theology (as contrasted with simple doctrine) which Oden's book spends time upon (pp. 141-152). Rather, MacArthur's work centers more upon practical matters of the pastoral office. This is not to say that the idea of pastors doing good theology isn't presented in this book, but that a chapter isn't devoted to the idea. Of special interest is a chapter on worshipping, which frankly, is the best I've read in a concentrated study.
Although MacArthur holds to Reformed theology, there was only one instance within this work were this came to the forefront and drove his conclusions (p. 92, re: grace extended to children based upon parents beliefs). Overall MacArthur strikes me a sincere and compassionate minister who deeply cares for the direction of the church and those who shall lead it in the future and I would recommend this book to any Christian seeking to learn more about the office of elder/pastor.

The Master's Seminary Guide to Ministry

If you desire to emulate the pastoral ministry of John MacArthur, or you would like to be a student at Master's Seminary, or you dream of building a church modeled after Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, this is the book for you. In "Rediscovering Pastoral Ministry" you will find a condensed version of the pastoral theology curriculum of Master's Seminary. The book looks at the role of the pastor, the qualifications of a pastor, the personal and public sides of the pastors life, and the major areas of church ministry. While the Bible seems to provide principles and guidelines in which individual churches are allowed to express their unique ministries, I found MacArthur and his team to be very opinionated and dogmatic about the way church should be done. Many of his methods and concepts would be both impractical and ineffective for the majority of the church world. The Bible sets the bar high when it comes to qualifying for the pastoral office. I found MacArthur sets the qualifications even higher than that which Scripture requires. Portions of the book provide valuable teaching for all evangelical pastors and churches. The author's high view of Scripture and Biblical authority is refreshing. Despite my cautions about the book, it is a valuable contribution to pastoral literature. If your views are the same as MacArthur or you're willing to wade through his dogma on disputable issues, you'll be enriched by the book.

Full of wonderful ideas

I met Luci at a Women of Faith conference years ago and have enjoyed reading about her journey. I love this book because it reminds me to go, to risk, to reach past my comfort zone.
This book is written in a way that everyone can enjoy the journey with her. She brings you right into her world of adventure.

What a fun ride - not to mention funny, encouraging, inspiring, challenging,uplifting,and honest! I have attended four Women of Faith conferences (makes a great mom and daughter or a friends' weekend getaway:) and have always been encouraged and challenged by Luci Swindoll. Having heard her speak allows me to "hear" her as I read. However, you do not have to have heard her to get the full benefit of her story. When she states she "married adventure," she is not kidding. And the adventure is not just from her actual experiences, but from her whole attitude toward life. She has learned that the "special" days are not the only ones to savor. Ms. Swindoll pulls the reader into her belief that every day is a beautifully wrapped and intricate gift from God and we have the opportunity to open this fabulous gift every single day, hour, and minute of our lives. Although her life path has certainly been different from mine (she has remained single, had a challenging career in business, gives speeches to HUGE groups, and has traveled the world while I followed the more "traditional" path of marriage, motherhood, etc. I have not survived amazing travel adventures, I did survive two teenage boys:), her joy and enthusiasm are contagious and applicable to and life and any situation. This is NOT one of those "I am wonderful, my life is wonderful, and everything has been wonderful" books(you know, like some of the Christmas letters we have all received). Ms Swindoll is incredibly open about her shortcomings and mistakes and how she has, like the rest of us, been discplined by God to deal with these things.
I just cannot give this book a high enough recommendation. You will be encouraged as well as challenged, feel great joy and some sadness, and often find yourself asking "why in the world would she want to travel THERE and/or do THAT???" But at the end, I guarantee you will be looking at every detail of your life with new and curious eyes and looking to your faith in God as permeating each of those details in amazing ways. I know I will read this again and again and I can't wait to get to the Women of Faith conference this summer!(...)

About the Author
Growing up as the daughter of piano teacher Gladys Smisor, Jane began her childhood lessons with Leota Anderson in Hutchinson, Kansas. After graduating from Barnard College of Columbia University, she continued her studies with Isabelle Vengerova in New York, and received a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jane Smisor Bastien was formerly a pedagogy professor and director of the Preparatory Department of Music at Tulane University, where she had an opportunity to extensively research current methodology in developing the Bastien teaching materials for children.

Because she still teaches a large number of students in her home in La Jolla (San Diego), Jane's composing continues to be directly related to her own students' experiences. She knows what appeals to contemporary children and writes music that they will find fun to play. In recognition of their significant contribution to music and music education, Jane and her husband James Bastien were presented with the 1999 MTNA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Excellent books!

I think these books are excellent. My son is four and uses this series with his piano teacher. We had tried two other programs with other teachers (one was Suzuki) and this has been the best fit for my son. like the balance of this program between being child friendly but not too gimmicky. I highly recommend them.

Disappointing...

I had a seminary professor who said that if you get one good illustration out of an illustration book, you got your money's worth. Well, I guess I got my money's worth, but I was expecting more. Many of the "illustrations" are quotes from Swindoll's books, and weak quotes at that. And many of the illustrations are simply limp. With as much preaching experience as he has, one would think he could present a better line up than is found here. Maybe he just didn't want to give out his A material. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this book unless you can find it at a rock-bottom price. And even then, you might have paid too much for it.

This book contains information that touches on many situations of life. I had a hard time putting it down. It is a compilation of poetry, wisdom and history that will not want too miss a single line.
I have found it to be loaded with ice breakers during my Sunday School Class. Whether it be with comedy or emotional, it contains many topics.

Beat Winter's Doldrums

I have used this series every year. They have everything I want in a devotional. In addition to the variety of devotionals from various sources, there is a bible verse, a quote, and beautiful photography. This winter edition is falling apart and I am ordering another.
