Garrison has long wielded wit against the buffoonery of the Religious Right in her articles for the Christian humor magazine the Wittenburg Door and at the blog God's Politics. Now she turns her satirical glance against the New Atheists, among whom she sees a similar obscurantist self-seeking at work. The result is an uneven book. It is occasionally witty, as when she compares Sam Harris to Anne Coulter, or Daniel Dennett to the pot-smoking professor in Animal House. At times she scores what could be devastating points against the New Atheists: if imposing religion on the young really is child abuse, why do these young people not show the medical symptoms of abuse victims? Garrison is also adept at pointing to places where radical Christianity is transforming society. But these successes are often lost amid informal writing, sentences like Simply put, I need to pay attention here because when my gut starts acting up, something ain't right, and paragraphs that end with single words like Kewl and phrases such as  'Nuff said. Finally, Garrison's turn to her own story—a minister father, dead too young of alcoholism—is touching at times, but it sits awkwardly beside the casual witticisms. (Jan.)

Witty, but Utterly Fails

I like Becky Garrisons blogs on Belief.net and her writings for the Wittenburg Door. She is a talented satirist and she does in this book make a point or two. Unfortunately, she often gets sidetracked and her book suffers greatly for it. Because she is so committed with sounding "witty," "satirical," and "open-minded" she goes on short red-herrings that should have been devoted to stronger, more tightly constructed arguments.

I'm sure her sarcasm is natural, but it reads as if it is forced - it just happens too often. She is so bent on appearing fair minded by showing the sins of Christianity that she spends too many moments taking quick pot-shots at Ann Coulter, Jerry Fallwell, John Spong and even President Bush. Her message would be more constructive and logical to make the connection that Christ and his teachings must logically be based on the teaching itself (or better yet, Christ himself), not the aberrational sayings and actions of some of its members. She does take some time to write about the good things Christians have done (the logical conclusions of following Christ), but I am not so sure it adds up to the writings where she attacks the failings of many who claim Christ. By her own arguments, Dawkins may just have a case after all.

Overall, the book fails because it spends too much time on side issues of the debate (centering prayer for one) and not enough going after the heart of the debate - logical and theological reasons to believe and why it is not delusional. I hope she writes more, but I hope she stays more focused on the task at hand.

A wild ride

Prominent atheists like Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett and Richard Dawkins (known as the "New Atheists") have made quite a stir in recent years by attacking Christianity head-on, in part through a number of bestselling books.

Becky Garrison makes quite a stir in the Christian world through her work as senior contributing editor for The Wittenberg Door ("Pretty Much the World's Only Religious Satire Magazine"). Most often, the targets of her biting satire are poufy-haired televangelists, Religious Right fundies, and even the occasional milquetoast, mainline liberal. Considering the way she lavishes her wit and sarcasm on the faithful, you can just imagine what she has in store for an assortment of atheists when they begin treading on her turf.

Only you don't have to imagine that at all, since Garrison takes aim at said assortment in THE NEW ATHEIST CRUSADERS. And she does so with her usual gusto. Using their own words against them, Garrison skewers their arguments, pokes fun at their ignorance and exposes their distortions. And you can tell she has a lot of fun doing all that. But she also wisely points her finger where it often belongs --- leveled straight at Christians who give atheists too much fodder and pointing right back at herself when she behaves badly.

"When confronted with aggressive atheists," she writes, "some Christians assume the mantle of the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz chanting, 'I do believe, I do believe, I do believe.'" Garrison goes on to describe the atheists' stepped-up efforts to dismantle the Christian faith. "As long as people continue to buy into the anti-God game, this junk is gonna come down the pike. Time to put an end to this. So, I guess I gotta put on my satirical shorts, get into the ring, and put up my dukes."

Garrison aims her punches at her adversaries on such matters as their faulty theology, oversimplification and reliance on medieval clerics in an effort to try to prove their point --- as well as their many sins of omission. She takes them to task for sniffing out Christianity's lunatic fringe and positioning them as mainstream, and failing to acknowledge the tremendous amount of good done by Christians throughout history and in contemporary society. Amid all this scuffling, Garrison provides poignant anecdotes from her own life that offer glimpses into her journey of faith and activism.

The book also features a witty timeline of atheism, an interview with Hemant the Friendly Atheist and extensive notes, some of which are a hoot. Readers familiar with Garrison's writing style (she is also the author of the equally satirical RED AND BLUE GOD, BLACK AND BLUE CHURCH) will be well prepared for her casual, sassy and slangy way with language. If playing fast and loose with English offends you, well, you may need to gear up for a wild ride.

Garrison picks apart the new atheists

Reporter, writer, and satirist Becky Garrison who ably wields her MDiv from Yale steps into the ring to take on these atheist crusaders, who have set out to undermine religion, in her book The New Atheist Crusaders and Their Unholy Grail. Garrison is a Christian writer who contributes to the God's Politics blog, serves as contributing editor to the Wittenburg Door, among other projects. Though not a scientist, Garrison is an able researcher who carefully steps through the various levels involved in this issue: science, religion, politics, and some pretty flimsy, overblown accusations the new atheists level against Christians.

Keep in mind that while Garrison is fighting the new atheists' writings toe-to-toe, she's not setting out to attack them personally. By adopting a kind of zany, light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek tone, Garrison avoids a combative tone, opting instead to kind of playfully slap around the views of the new atheists. She doesn't deal a knock-out blow, but carefully picks them apart with a wide smile, revealing the foolish bits of their arguments, while never leaving behind a bloody opponent on the mat.

You could call it a humane mercy-killing of the new atheists.

In addition, Garrison uses her journalistic expertise to assemble a carefully chosen group of scientists and religion experts to stand in her corner. She even finds atheists who want nothing to do with the closed-minded new atheists, but rather want a friendly, civil discussion about whether or not God exists (201). With friendly atheists, theologians, God-believing scientists, and Christian activists in her corner, she unleashes round after round of exploration and analysis of the new atheists. While the new atheists may dismiss Garrison because she's not credentialed into the academic elite, I assure you this book is a knock-out blow to the new atheists brand.

Garrison isn't so much concerned about debunking all atheists though. She presents plausible explanations about God that will make any atheist think twice, but she isn't concerned so much with winning a fight to prove God once and for all. I stress this because many apologetic Christian books can adopt a combative, us vs. them tone. Garrison isn't up to that here. Rather, she's picking apart the sensational, absolutist claims of the new atheists who misrepresent God and religion.

Robert A. Guelich is Professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. He holds the B.A. from Wheaton College, M.A. from the University of Illinois, S.T.B. from Fuller Theological Seminary, and the D.Theol. from the University of Hamburg. He has also done postgraduate studies at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Tübingen. His previous publications include The Sermon on the Mount: A Critical-Historical Commentary; Matthew in the New International Commentary; and as Editor; Unity and Diversity in New Testament Theology: Festschrift for George Ladd.

Excellent resource

Truly wonderful "high end" scholarship in the book of Mark. Redactional and source criticism doesn't get any better (in my humble accessment). It is truly sad that Guelich passed away and won't be giving us the second volume, although I expect Evans (who will author the follow up) will do an excellent job. Anyone who wants to know where scholarship is at regarding this gospel, should check this out. Highly recommended by other NT scholars, such as RE Brown, Pheme Perkins.

If you are looking for a commentary on the Gospel of Mark and don't have an advanced degree you will have poorly spent your money.
It's just not for the average greek student or Pastor. If you are interested in Greek studies get the Gospel of Mark: New International Greek Testament Commentary. If you are looking for sermon preparation try Mark (Baker Exegetical Commentary Series).

Wothwhile Reading!

In this day and age when one is searching for books to discover who I am, all I ever come acrossed are books with New Age agendas. However, "Better Than My Dreams" is exactly the kind of book that I was looking for in learning who I really am and what the second season of my life holds. I am not a teen, I am almost 53 years old and searching for a life worthy of Christ. I highly recommend this book for any woman who wants to experience a full life in Christ! I will read this book again and again. Good journaling prompt in this book or Bible study questions to ponder.

Life Changing Book

This is my first review ever written, and I have read many good books. This book is changing my thinking in a way I have never been challenged before. I couldn't put it down, and have re-read half of it again. I am 45 years old, and I have six children, and in one week I have already been using the book to counsel my college aged children about God's plan for their lives. It has hit me hard, and I was weeping through many pages as I experienced the Spirit of God healing my heart. Thank you Paula for clearing up so many murky places in my life. I was getting there, but you gave me a hand up out of the mirey clay. Paula is a very wise lady, and the wisdom of God was with her when she wrote this book. Today I bought 10 more copies to give to my friends. I have also given away many copies of her book, Sex and the Soul of a women.

Wonderful!

I loved Paula Rinehart's first book and held a ladies bible study with it. It was wonderful - everyone walked away blessed. I couldn't imagine a second book being even better, but it is! This is a spiritually significant book for any woman and I highly recommend it as part of every Christian woman's spiritual walk. It helped to see those areas I had yet to give to God. Once I was able to recognize what they were, my relationship with God took a brand new turn - a dynamically freeing turn. Paula does indeed take us to a place that is better than our dreams with this book. Thank you Paula.

In our culture today anything, even news about God, can be sold if it is packaged freshly; but when it loses its novelty, it goes on the garbage heap. There is a great market for religious experience in our world; there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of virtue, little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called holiness.

Our generation toys dangerously with an Iím-getting-tired-so-letís-just-quit mentality. And this is not limited to the spiritual realm. Dieting is a daily discipline, so we stay fat. Finishing school is an everyday thing, so we bail out. Cultivating a close relationship is painful, so we back off. Working through conflicts in a marriage is a tiring struggle day by day, so we walk away. Sticking with an occupation is tough on given days, so we change jobs.

The let's-just-quit mentality is upon us.

Ignace Jan Paderewski, the famous Polish pianist and statesman, was once scheduled to perform at a great concert hall in America. It was a black-tie affair, a high society extravaganza. Present in the audience that evening was a woman who had brought her nine-year-old son, hoping that he would be encouraged to practice the piano if he could just hear the great Paderewski at the keyboard. Weary of waiting for the concert to begin, and being there against his wishes anyway, the lad squirmed restlessly in his seat. Then, as his mother turned to talk with friends, the boy slipped out of his seat and down the aisle, strangely drawn by the ebony concert grand sitting majestic and alone at the center of the huge stage. He sat down on the tufted leather stool, placed his small hands on the black-and-white keys, and began to play "Chop Sticks." Suddenly the crowd hushed, and hundreds of frowning faces turned in his direction. Irritated and embarrassed, some began to shout, "Hey, get that boy away from there!" "Whereís his mother?" "Somebody stop him!"

Backstage, Paderewski heard the uproar and the sound of the simple tune. When he saw what was happening, he hurried onto the stage. Without a word to the audience, he walked up behind the lad, reached his arms around either side of him, and began to improvise a countermelody. As the two made music together, the master pianist kept whispering in the boy's ear, "Keep going. Don't quit, son. Keep on playing . . . don't stop . . . don't quit."

So it is with us. We hammer away at life day by day, and sometimes it seems about as significant as "Chop Sticks." Then, about the time we are ready to give up, along comes the Master, who leans over and whispers, "Donít quit. Keep going," as He provides His divine countermelody of grace, love, and joy at just the right moment.

Are you one of those weary pilgrims? Is the road getting long? Is hope wearing a little thin? Don't quit. Keep on . . . day by day. Finish the course.

This is a Great Daily Devotional!

I have tried other daily devotionals, but this is the best one I have found so far! I really like how each day has a scripture reference and a story that somehow relates to that scripture reference. I usually read the story first, then read the scripture reference, then think about what God might be trying to show me and how the story and scripture reference fit into my own life (sometimes writing in a journal). The stories and scripture references are often very applicable to life and are good to think about. Sometimes life is so hectic that there doesn't seem to be time to sit down and have a proper "Quiet Time" with God. I am currently on week 9 in this devotional and I find time each day read the devotional and scripture reference and to apply them to my life. It is a great way to start each day. I have found that this devotional keeps really makes me think and dwell into scripture more than some other devotionals I have tried. The devotional for the day might actually get me interested in reading more in my bible then the suggested scripture reference for that day. This devotional has helped me grow closer to God daily in my spiritual walk, and I would recommend this book to anyone of any age if you want a good devotional to help you get closer to God daily!

Well Written Daily Devotional

I purchased this book a few years ago. Chuck Swindoll is a pastor in the area that I live. I have never been to his church, but I have listened to his teachings on the radio. For this reason, I gained an interest in purchasing a few of his books. Pastor Swindoll is an excellent speaker and an excellent author. This daily devotional is very rich and full of wisdom. Highly recommended!

I love Charles Swindoll. But the Kindle version of this book has problems. Very poorly formatted and difficult to read. Something is wrong with the font that was chosen by the publisher. As much as I like the content, I deleted it off my Kindle because it was too ugly.

Finding these old familiar exercises plus Czerny selections in one booklet was a "must order" for me. The Czerny studies (20 in all) as stated are an "indispensable part of the young pianist's technical program", and are more than enough for my aging arthritic hands. Technical practice is enhanced by the musical sounds these studies provide the "student's" ear!

People had more respect for God, His Word and for those who taught it, even for church buildings. They were more open to hearing and receiving the Word into their hearts. Those days were far from perfect but there was more holy fear of God and that is a good thing. I also remember the events he spoke of as the years went on and saw how our country especially changed and brought us to where we are today. This book touched my soul, caused me to praise God, convicted me, and drew me closer to my God. A life lived for God is a wonderful life! And to obey God's call on your life, like W. A Criswell did is the best way to live no matter what He has called you to do.

A great book about a great man who led a great church in a great city. WW A CRISWELL was a great man who preached the Word. I enjoyed this book because it helped me to see how faithful our God is.
