Not so for Idaho-born Akiane, a media star who, at the age of 10, confidently reveals her divinely inspired artwork and poetry to the wider world. The book is divided into three parts, the first section being the story of Akiane's life and her visions (which first began at the age of four) as told by her mother—a kind of hagiography of sorts. It's well meaning, but generally stilted and flat in its prose. Most interesting are parts two and three, the second section devoted to full color depictions of Akiane's paintings (vivid, fantasy-like portraits in color and scene), and the third a selection of her poetry. About the Author
Akiane Kramarik is a ten-year-old internationally renowned artist and poet. She created her first drawing at age four and at the age of eight sold her first painting for $10,000. Akiane speaks four languages and wants to use her God-given talent to raise money to help needy children all over the world. She lives in Idaho with her parents, three brothers, and a big-hearted golden retriever.

An amazing artist!

Akiane Kramarik has captured my coworkers and myself at our bookstore from the first moment we saw her book. The imagery is stunning and quite evocative. She is clearly mystically inclined and is hard to understand at times. Her mother's story of her young life, from birth to eleven years old, is compelling, even if not very professional. She's a mom and not a professional writer after all. The poems are breathtaking and profound, taking several readings to begin to "get" them. Though I suspect that if Akiane has gotten these from God, then they may not be "gotten" until we share her heavenly perspective. It seems that she is a prophet of sorts. We'll have to await what comes to pass in the coming years to see if she is really of God or not. One thing is for certain however, and that is her talent. Whether it's her painting, sketching, or poetry, it's no overstatement to call her a genius. I just hope she can stay humble in such an environment. I look forward to what her future will bring to us!

This is a great thing to see. We are seeing someone who is born with this talent and we get to see her progress with this. I think people get caught up in the "Christian" aspect of it and seem to be negative about her.

What is she? She's an 11 year old who paints what she sees in her mind. Does it matter if it not stylized as people think it should be? Again, when you hear this artist talk, she paints her dreams and what she sees in her mind. I think that's true of a lot of artists.

And for the people who are negative about her, it has drawn their attention too.

Is this artist looking to be taken seriously in the "art world?" It does not seem that way. This artist is painting what she wants to paint and seems to love it.

Children, even those called "prodigies", have something to teach us and we put them off because they're "just kids."

I love this and take it for what it is.

Well written, unbiased, from an MD-historian

The author writes well. The book is short and not packed with sidelights. Along the way the author draws parallels with today's headlines, and shows they are old news ("war on drugs" was tried by the Spanish; "zero tolerance" by the early FDA in the US during 1905).

As a bonus, the author explains medical oddities, as he is also the world's expert on drug effects on the body. For example, why cocaine injected is more toxic than cocaine ingested, why cocaine injected in certain parts of the body leads to fatalities while in other parts of the body does not, and why cocaine and wine (which was the basis for a very popular wine 150 years ago--Mariani wine which was one of the first 'celebrity endorsed' mass advertisement product) is more potent than cocaine alone. Also the origins of Merck (cocaine marketer) and Freud (unwitting or witting promoter), and the different species of cocaine plants (some more potent than others).

Packed with information: Coca-cola and cocaine (not enough drug to give you a buzz); the government sponsored use of cocaine (shades of today's North Korea); early explorers promoting cocaine when they should have known better; urban legends and cocaine; why pure cocaine will induce animals to kill themselves from overdose (unlike morphine, another alkaloid based drug).

As a bonus, you learn about cocaine manufacture (coca leaves plus lime, then add to the solution an organic solvent like kerosene, gasoline, or alcohol, then precipitate the solution into a solid by adding an acid (since the solution is base) like sulfuric acid, to yield almost pure cocaine powder).

Very good book for the intelligent person. You can clearly see that today's 'war on drugs' is distorted: any traveler to South America can drink "matte de coca" (Coca leaf tea) and not get high, but try that in North America and the prison lobby will send you to jail.

Dr. Karch's book is neutral on this issue but implicitly argues against a blunderbuss approach.

an eye-opening chronology of drug use in the world

The author, who is also a physician, has now become a historian as well. His lucid and methodical recounting of the history of drugs use in general and cocaine in particular, truly opened my eyes. As a physician, he explains why the drug does what it does and why people use it. As a historian, he documents all his statements of fact with an extensive bibliography. He does not sound like he is on a crusade either for or against drugs, but one can't help come to a conclusion about the current state of affairs in the world's "war on drugs." A must-read book for anyone who claims to have an opinion on the issue of drugs in our society.

Not Quite Foxe's Book of Martyrs

Most of the stories are okay. Many are challenging. A far better book to read, though, would be Foxe's Book of Martyrs, and they even have updated editions with some modern stories. As for this book, extreme devotion, it could be much better if they had simply told the stories of those who had been persecuted without forcing them into a somewhat weak devotional. Most of the stories are good, but then the editors try to add a little challenge or devotional at the bottom of the pages, and they are weak and fluffy in comparison to the stories of persecution. The stories often tell of a Christian enduring severe persecution, but then the devotional compares that persecution to office politics or a disobedient child or some event far less serious than facing death for one's faith.
Some of the stories seem out of place. They have some great stories of Christian martyrs, and then throw in Anne Hutchinson, who was killed by the Indians; Hutchinson herself is often considered to have some heretical views and her story does not seem to fit in the book along with many of these heroes. There are some stories in which the authors take a Bible story and try to dramatize it, and the supposed conversations seem forced, fake, and not very realistic.
It would have been better, in my view, to place the stories in chronological order. However, one can find a story by a modern-day martyr, and then the next page is about someone from early Rome.
There are also a few grammatical errors, and changes made by updating stories, but losing some of the fervor. For example, an older biography of James Chalmers, missionary, states that when Chalmers was 15-years old, his pastor read a letter from a missionary and then challenged their Sunday school class: "I wonder if there is any lad here who will yet become a missionary. Is there one who will go to the heathen and to savages and tell them of God and His love?" Chalmers was determined to go and tell the heathen. However, this extreme devotion book says: "I wonder if there is a boy here who will . . . bring the gospel to the cannibals?" challenged a missionary in a letter to young James Chalmers's church. So--not only does this devotional change the story somewhat by stating that the challenge came from a letter rather than from a pastor who had eariler read the letter, not only does this devotional state that it was a challenge to the church rather than to a Sunday school class, but in trying to update the story, they produced some grammatical errors. By combining two sentences into one, extreme devotion turned a question into a statement, yet kept the question mark. Also, in trying to update the wording, they incorrectly used "bring the gospel to the cannibals," when it should have been "take the gospel."

Hans Bret wrote a letter from prison to his mother in the year 1576, according to Martyrs' Mirror, yet extreme devotion states that it was in 1577. There is a story in a Christian History magazine, though, that has many similar and exact phrases as the extreme devotion story, so it may be that extreme devotion basically copied or adapted some of the story from the magazine.
More than once, the extreme devotion book tells of someone and says that they were "considered a threat," when they were not at all considered threats, but were simply considered to be heretics or Christians, but not threats to the armed persecutors.
Foxe's Book of Martyrs clearly tells who the persecutors were, but this is not always the case in extreme devotion. While this book mentions Muslim persecutors at times, it seems to avoid all reference to any Catholic persecutors, even though it is very clear, as in the letter to his mother that Hans Bret wrote, telling his mother that the priests and an inquisitor tried to force him to admit that Jesus gave His disciples His physical body to eat rather than bread, and that he was condemned as a heretic for not recanting, but held that God had opened his eyes from the errors of the Roman Catholic church.
This book is okay, and some of the stories are in fact very good, but as often happens in an attempt to modernize books and make them more popular, much of the meat has fallen out of what could have been a great book. I would advise you to read the updated (or even the older version) Foxe's Book of Martyrs and get a more meaningful, accurate, direct, version of what many Christians went through throughout the years and are still going through. Of course, Voice of the Martrys and Open Doors are both great websites to visit to learn of modern-day persecution and what we can and should be doing.

Do you ever come across a book that seems like everyone but you has read? It's received rave reviews and you half-heartedly add it to the to-read list but you don't consider it high priority. You'll get around to it...eventually. Well that's the way I have felt about Les Miserables. And to be honest, when I see the majority going googly-eyed over a book I tend to avoid it as it usually isn't my cup of tea. However when the opportunity presented itself to read this French classic in the form of an abridged edition I jumped at the chance. And I have no regrets. While there was no doubt a good deal that I missed out on I found this modern edition of a timeless story very well done. Very few classics I come across fall under the "page-turner" category but in my own humble opinion Les Misérables was excellent. It reveals the triumphs and fall of mankind and how one decision can set into motion a whole series of incidents that have both positive and negative effects. --J. Norman Denny Translation is Readable

I have both the original Wilbour translation and the Norman Denny translation of this book, and I'd say that the Denny translation is the more readable of the two. Graham Robb, in his award-winning biography of Hugo has called Denny's translation "swiss cheese" and "translation as censorship." However, it's well-written, and the "excised" sections are included as appendices to which any reader can turn. In places where Denny edits the prose, he captures the spirit of the novel.

But the best comparison is made by reading:

here's Wilbour from the beginning of Part Two, Book Four:

"Forty years ago, the solitary pedestrian who ventured into the unknown region of La Salpetriere and went up along the Boulevard as far as the Barrier d'italie, reached certain points where it might be said that Paris had disappeared. It was no longer a solitude, for there were people passing; it was not the country for there were houses and streets. It was not a city, the streets had ruts in them, like highways, and grass grew along their borders; it was not a village, the houses were too lofty. What was it then? It was an inhabited place where there was nobody. It was a desert place where there was somebody. It was a boulevard of the great city, a street of Paris, wilder at night than a forest and gloomier by day than a graveyard. It was the old quarter of the horse-market."

Denny's version of the same passage

There Aren't Enough Stars for Books Like This.

A few words of advice about Les Miserables...
Buy an old copy (am I allowed to say that!). I found mine in an antique bookstore. It's an old beat-up hardcover. It just makes the whole experience more...historic!
Dare to read the unabridged edition. If Hugo could have told this story in fewer words he would have. Don't cheat yourself out of the real thing. Charles Wilbour's translation is an excellent one.
Take your time with it. When you get frustrated by lengthy explanations and background information, put it down and come back to it. But don't give up!
Les Miserables is one of the greatest stories every written. Hugo brings to life such weighty concepts as Grace, Forgiveness, Repentance, and Redemption and Salvation. The spiritual imagery is very rich. The interaction between Jean Valjean and the Bishop is absolutely life changing.
"Jean Valjean my brother: you belong no longer to evil, but to good. It is your soul that I am buying for you. I withdraw it from dark thoughts and from the spirit of perdition, and I give it to God!"

What is your Vision?

This is the type of book that will make you think if you allow it to. The book is broken down into thematic little sections, each having an accompanying verse, title theme, expansion/explanation, and an afterthought encouraging you to reflect on the idea. This may not be anything new for inspirational books of this like, but I felt it worked well. I always say--if it ain't broke don't fix it. While reading I wrote a journal of what I felt some of the more important ideas were. This helped me mentally prepare for an upcoming season (I coach). Even for someone who isn't a religious fundamentalist, which I am far from, this book provides quality ideas to ponder on if you are good at creating your own analogies and metaphors. I recommend it to anyone in a leadership position.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Excellent technic exercises for the older level 3 piano student ...

Excellent technic exercises for the older level 3 piano student (ages 10+). This method focuses heavily on chord development- including inversions. Exercises are fun, upbeat, and never tedious. They are repetitive enough to get the concept mastered, with adequate practice time. I recommend this for my students who are interested in playing jazz, hymns, pop accompaniment music, and movie themes. The technics in this curriculum do not focus heavily on classical- so you will need to supplement appropriately. Students will also need to be able to reach an octave.
