This book contains a great deal of fundamental information that is as valid today as it was when the book was first published in 1997.

It doesn't appear to have been revised since then though, so you'll need to look elsewhere for developments in the last 12 years.

Gordon J. Wenham (PhD, University of London) is tutor in Old Testament at Trinity College, Bristol, England, and professor emeritus of Old Testament at the University of Gloucestershire. Very good treatment from a literary perspective

There is no question that this is one of the best commentaries on Genesis today. This commentary is one of the essential starting places for research on Genesis. His interaction with critical views is thorough, though if you have a problem with all forms of source criticism, you will definitely find yourself disagreeing with him in many places.

However, Wenham is no skeptic. Many times in both volumes he points out places which clearly point to the antiquity of the text. He clearly holds a high view of the historicity of Genesis, as can be seen in his interpretation of the mention of camels in the patriarchal narrative (he sees them as a 2nd millennium luxury, rather than a historical anachronism). There is also extensive comment on the broader literary dimensions of Genesis, such as palistrophic and panelled structures, which highly suggests, at the very least, a high degree of editorial activity, so as to make source/form/traditio-historical analysis virtually irrelevant, and you get the sense that Wenham is on board here. I can't think of a single place where he allows source criticism to derail his exegesis. He clearly is treating the canonical version.

The only place that conservative readers may find troubling is in his treatment on "The Religion of the Patriarchs." If you are familiar with his other work, you know what I'm talking about. Wenham believes that there is good evidence that Yahweh of the Old Testament was earlier worshipped as El, head of the Canaanite Pantheon. One line of argument he uses, for example, is that Baal eventually replaced El, and is presented in the Bible as one of Yahweh's big "contenders." In this respect, he is very similar to F.M. Cross.

When all is said and done, however, Wenham is definitely a 5-star commentary. The good pastor/student understands that he must read critically, not swallowing, hook-line-and-sinker, everything is put in front of him. Nevertheless, both volumes by Wenham are well worth the money you pay for them, and will pay for themselves in edification and knowledge gained.

Between Wenham and Hamilton

No doubt Wenham and Hamilton have written the best conservative's commentary on Genesis. Longman said that "between Wenham and Hamilton, Genesis is well covered."

But to have both means you must buy 4 volumes because both Wenham and Hamilton separated their commentaries on Genesis into two volumes (Wenham: Genesis 1-15 & 16-50; Hamilton: Genesis 1-17 & 18-50).

I have read all of the four volumes and found that for the first part of Genesis, Hamilton tend to be more conservative than Wenham (e.g. compared their interpretations on the "spirit" in Gen. 1:2), but for the second part Wenham has given me more insight (He always can find fresh meanings and applications from the famous Christian stories that I have been reading since I was in the sunday school!).

My suggestion is if you have enough money buy all, but if you don't buy the first book of Hamilton and the second book of Wenham.

About the Author
Barbara Johnson guided millions of hurting women through the tunnel of despair with her best-selling books including Plant a Geranium in Your Cranium, Living Somewhere Between Estrogen and Death, and Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy. She and her husband, Bill, founded the non-profit Spatula Ministries which helps parents in crisis. She died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 79.

Joy in the Morning

I've had a lot of challenges to my faith lately, and Barbara Johnson's books never cease to leave me laughing and encouraged; she is a huge blessing from the Lord! I would highly recommend this book - and all of her others as well - to those needing a laugh to start the day or to keep you going whenever. (I use this book as a devotional in the morning over breakfast.)
God is good, and that will never change; life can be very challenging, though, and reminders of God's goodness through humor and loving thoughts can be a big boost to start the day with. Highly recommended!

GREAT BOOK AT A GREAT PRICE

I am a newer member of New Horizons Band NE Ohio. This is a community group comprised mostly of older adults of all musical skill levels... from beginner to novice to advanced.

Our director, Jim Adkins, has been using Standard of Excellence instruction books for several years. He recommended that all members obtain this edition of the book, which is the more advanced than the other two in the series.

Since I buy most of my books at Amazon, it was the first place I looked. Sure enough, the book was in stock. I ordered it and it was delivered within two days.

I am very pleased with the purchase.

Note: If you're an older adult who is simply thinking of taking up a musical instrument, use an Internet search engine to ascertain if there is a New Horizons Band in your community. (There are many throughout the USA.) If you find one nearby, arrange for a visit. You may wish to join. Hope this helps!

Great 2nd book for elementary flutist

Excellent curriculum...songs are fun...fingering chart in the back is helpful. My 4th grade flutist loves it and enjoys getting stickers for completing certain songs. The CDs are REALLY great for practice at home - makes things interesting for her and she hears the right tones and beats from the recordings.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Theory Primer Level/Bastiens Piano Basics

This is an excellent source for teaching beginner piano lessons. I used it when I began taking piano lessons 26 years ago and used it when I began teaching lessons 7 years ago. It is basic without being boring. I have just moved to a new community and am starting with brand new students - I can't imagine using anything but Bastiens books.
