Wonderful book. Extremely uplifting in a pure way......

This book is an amazing book and will give you perspective in life. Max Lucado has really gone out of his way to make all of us who choose to read this book really look into what is important. This book is extremely uplifting and gives hope. I have reached a point in my life where I depend on uplifting reading due to what I would describe as a really messed up sense of tragedy in my family.

This book along with the Bible are helping me through what many would believe to be the impossible. When one experiences so much loss and so much pain in life, Only God can lead the way. I was drawn to this book simply due to the fact that it could bring hope and it has.

The Burdens discussed in this book are the following:
-the burden of a lesser God
-the burden of self-reliance
-the burden of discontent
-the burden of weariness
-the burden of worry-----Big chapter.....

Today's Explanation of the 23rd Psalm

This book is a "modern day" explanation of the 23rd Psalm. I highly recommend it for all youth and adults. It can be read straight through or one chapter at a time, skipping around. It makes an excellent gift to someone who is laden with various of life's burdens. Max Lucado has a fresh and many times, humorous way of writing. He is definitely my favorite Christian author!

The 23rd Psalm applied to your personal burdens

Max Lucado uses his sense of humor and ability to illustrate personal experience and anecdotes to make clear to the reader how the 23rd Psalm applies to each and every person, regardless of which burden that person struggles with carrying. Max breaks down the 23rd Psalm and explains each little part of it and how it applies to the reader's life (example - Max explains how "you are with me" from the 23rd Psalm means that when we are feeling burdened with {or lugging around an empty bag of} loneliness, that God has promised to be with us and never leave us. Lucado also presents possible reasons for why God might allow us to feel lonely, and how we can remedy that lonely feeling). Max also explains how Jesus is our shepherd and we are his sheep, and explores possible reasons why David chose this analogy for his psalm and not some other comparison. I liked how the discussions on different topics (about the 23rd Psalm and about burdens as well as about other ideas) were not superficial and Max addressed different feelings I had but didn't really stop to think about until it was mentioned in the book. Spending time with Traveling Light helped me recognize the extra baggage of burdens that I have been lugging around, and ways that I can set those burdens down and trust God to carry them for me. What Max had to say makes sense to me and brought a new meaning to the 23rd Psalm and also gave me a lot to think about (but I don't mean worry about - which is a burden we don't have to carry - I took away a refreshed spirit and hope in my heart from reading the book).

A very comprehensive elementary method

I'm not a band director, but I've played in a lot of bands, and can say this series avoids dryness while allowing a sensible progression in musicianship for the whole band. I especially like the fact that the percussion book includes snaredrums and bells equally. For an alternative check out the Rubank method.

The chapters are organized by advice to dads written by a father, guidance to preteens and teens from his daughter, with "Mom's Tips" sprinkled throughout and a lot of quotes from Scripture. Mistakes made by family members are shared without hesitation. "My biggest mistake with Heather? My need to be in control," writes Charles, and "I refused to let the idea of compromise penetrate my thick skull," admits Heather. Anecdotal stories will appeal to teens as they may see themselves in many situations, such as listening to "head banging" music, wearing certain clothes to upset their parents, or becoming sexually active. The "Relationship Lifters" at the end of each section are designed to steer family interactions in a more positive direction. Charles Stone serves as senior pastor of the Ginger Creek Community Church, a church of 1000 in the Chicago suburbs. He has a doctorate of ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and he has written articles for leading ministry and parenting magazines.

Heather Stone will begin nursing school soon. She writes and paints in her free time.

Encouraging with Solid Advice

This is a great resource for parents of teenagers who are facing the difficult challenges of adolescence in today's world.

It is co-written from the perspectives of both the father of a rebellious teen and the former rebel herself (she is now an adult in nursing school). There is an ongoing narrative telling about the struggles of Heather Stone starting at age 13, as well as those of her parents, Charles and Sherryl. Along with their encouraging story, there are nine 'relational life preservers' to help those with similar struggles.

There is a Christian perspective throughout this volume. Charles is a pastor and Heather is a prodigal daughter who has returned to her roots.

Although I have been fortunate enough to avoid most of the extremely difficult situations that Charles and his wife faced with Heather, I recommend this book for any parent of a teenager. Even parents of teens who are not totally rebellious face many trying times through the adolescent years. The advice given will be helpful for any parent with teenagers.

A powerful "teaching memoir" that all parents should read

A couple of years ago the movie Thirteen, staring Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood, had people talking with its frank depictions of early adolescent drug use, sexual promiscuity, and emotional angst. Media outlets picked up on the public's level of shock that the movie would show 13-year-olds engaged in such behavior. "Maybe 16- or 17-year-olds, but surely not kids so young?! And not middle-class white girls!" seemed to be the general feeling.

It didn't take long for adolescent psychologists to make the talk show rounds and confirm that this was, indeed, an accurate picture of how many young girls are starting to act out as they enter the teen years. And the movie only confirmed what pastor Charles Stone and his wife had learned the hard way, just a few years earlier, when their oldest daughter, Heather, turned 13.

Today Heather is 22 and a committed Christian pursuing a career in nursing. But for five years she tore herself and her family apart with behavior that the word "bad" doesn't modify with justice. Emergency rooms, a manual labor camp, mental hospitals, and countless rehab units became the terrain of their lives. In DAUGHTERS GONE WILD, DADS GONE CRAZY, Heather and her father tell their story in a he said/she said format for which a courtroom scene (he said) sets the stage:

"A handful of fidgety people sat in the nearly empty room. We took our seats in the back, and after a few moments the bailiff barked his customary, "All rise!" A dark-haired judge emerged from the side door. He seemed to float to his bench in his ankle-length black robe. I could feel my shoulders begin to tighten as we nervously sat in Courtroom A.

'Charles and Sherryl Stone vs. Heather Stone: Case number 43. Please come forward,' he bellowed.

The bailiff opened the waist-high swinging door that led to the judge's bench. The judge motioned for us to sit at the well-worn Formica covered table in front of him. He peered over his black-rimmed glasses. 'So what's the problem?' he asked.

With a dry mouth I muttered, 'We just can't handle our oldest daughter anymore. She runs away, stays out all night with boys, uses drugs and alcohol, curses us, and skips school. We've consulted a half-dozen psychologists. We've pled with her, fought with her, and grounded her. We're desperate. We need your help.'"

The judge threatened Heather with an ankle monitoring device if she didn't start obeying her parents, but it would take a lot more before she was ready and willing to make changes. No longer opposing litigants, father and daughter want to provide hope, encouragement, and a few hard-earned bits of advice to others facing similar turmoil. DAUGHTERS GONE WILD, DADS GONE CRAZY is divided into eleven chapters, nine of which are devoted to what the duo calls "relational life preservers." They include #1 "Don't Panic at the First Warning Signs," #5 "Reconnect with Gifts from the Heart," and #7 "Chose Your Battles --- And Lose Some on Purpose." The first half of each chapter features Charles speaking to dads and the second half features Heather talking to daughters.

This book is what I like to call a teaching memoir. It doesn't shy away from bullet-pointed instruction, but its soul is that of a narrative. And it's in the storytelling that this book is most powerful and instructive. Both father and daughter display a penchant for writing as they relive, in often emotionally raw and painful detail, their conflicts. Charles speaks honestly about the struggle to continue to love his daughter in the face of her vitriol, and Heather speaks candidly about the jabs from fellow students and friends --- incidents adults often overlook as petty in the lives of their children --- that fed her frustration and rebellion.

DAUGHTERS GONE WILD, DADS GONE CRAZY is geared for fathers and daughters, but many of its lessons would well serve any combination of parent/child conflict. In fact, I'd encourage all parents to read this book, regardless of your children's behavior or age. It will make you a better parent and a better support for fellow parents dealing with out-of-control children.

Fascinating and helpful

It's amazing to read of the downhill spiral of the relationship of this father and daughter (Charles and Heather). But then even more amazing to watch God put their relationship back together again. Lots of helpful advice here for parents and for teens (Heather writes directly to the teens while Charles writes to the parents). Read it if you're in a struggling parent/child relationship, or even if you want to just keep your current relationship healthy.

Duane Garrett (Ph.D., Baylor Univerity) is John R. Sampey Professor of Old Testament Interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Paul R. House is professor of biblical studies at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. He holds degrees from Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Missouri the University of Missouri, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div. and Ph.D.).

Excellent Commentary on Lamentations

Volume 23B of the WBC Series covers the Song of Songs written by Duane A. Garrett and Lamentations by Paul R. House. Garrett's part of the commentary is 266 pages long and House's is 206 pages. This review is of Lamentations.

House has written a thorough and up-to-date commentary on Lamentations. It is outstanding and one of the best commentaries that I have read. House has also written an excellent commentary on 1 & 2 Kings (NAC), an Old Testament Survey, and an Old Testament Theology.

The first 10 pages of the commentary consist of the preface, a commentary bibliography, and a general bibliography. These are followed by a 51-page introduction covering topics such as authorship and date, liturgical uses, poetic form and meter, place in the canon, and genre. This introduction is so good that I could write a review just on it. For example, in the section on authorship and date, House says that Lamentations is traditionally thought to have been written by the prophet Jeremiah, but most scholars believe that Lamentations was composed by several authors or compilers. He then does an extremely thorough survey of what scholars have said through the years, beginning with Introductions to the Old Testament, quoting S. R. Driver, Otto Eissfeldt, R. K. Harrison, and Raymond Dillard and Tremper Longman, among others. He next surveys commentaries, monographs, and articles, citing commentators such as John Calvin, C. F. Keil, Hermann Gunkel, and Claus Westermann.

Finally House gives his own opinion. He thinks that Lamentations was composed between the time of the fall of Jerusalem (587 B.C.) and the rebuilding of the temple (520-515 B.C.) by a single individual who loved the people of God very much, but who was grieved by their troubles because they were self-inflected woes. However, House would not go so far as to name Jeremiah as the author because the author chose not to reveal himself, which means that the author wanted the text to be read as an anonymous work.

The commentary proper is 145 pages long. Lamentations consists of 154 verses, which means that there is approximately one page of commentary proper per verse of Scripture. Following the WBC format, each section begins with a bibliography, House's own translation, a form/structure/setting section, a comment section, and an explanation. House's translation follows the MT (for the most part) and it is literal. He uses the form/structure/setting sections to full advantage, since the form and structure of the book of Lamentations are among its most distinctive and creative features. Lamentations is shaped as a series of four acrostic poems and one concluding acrostic-like poem. "A brief examination of the book's use of acrostic format, meter, echoing techniques, general structure, and mixing of genres will at least offer some glimpses into the artistic excellence of the book of Lamentations."

In the comment sections, House provides the verse-by-verse exposition. His writing is intelligent and thorough, with many theological insights. Throughout his exposition are discussions on divine severity, human responsibility, innocent suffering, and the actions of the wicked. House interacts with many other commentators, especially Hillers (AB), Berlin (OTL), Provan (NCB), and Renkema (HCOT). House gleans many of the best insights from these other commentators, at times agreeing with them, at times not, before he provides his own analyses. This interacting with, and quoting of, other great commentators is one of the highlights of House's commentary.

Not coincidentally, the commentaries that House interacts with the most are also among the best ones on Lamentations. Renkema is very comprehensive at 641 pages but costs $78.00 (and it's a paperback) on Amazon. Provan is highly-rated but evidently out-of-print and hard to find. Berlin is excellent and is a reasonable $29.00 on Amazon. Hillers is also excellent and sells for $32.00 on Amazon.

House's commentary goes for $33.00 on Amazon (I purchased a new copy for $24.31 from an Amazon.com seller) and as a bonus you get Garrett's commentary on the Song of Songs. Highly recommended.
