If you can get your hands on this book, buy it. It's part of a two-volume series on Matthew's Gospel and is simply one of the best I've been privileged to read. I return to it frequently. Bruner is a Presbyterian, former prof. at Whitworth College in Spokane. I've heard it will be reprinted again soon. In that case, buy both volumes!

About the Author

David E. Aune, Ph.D., is Professor of Theology with specialties in New Testament and Christian Origins at Loyola University in Chicago. He has received M.A. degrees from Wheaton Graduate School of Theology and the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. is from the University of Chicago. Among his publications are The New Testament in Its Literary Environment and Prophecy in Early Christianity and the Ancient Mediterranean World.

Gold Standard for professional scholars

I certainly agree with points made by one reviewer who described these volumes as encyclopaedic "database for specialists", but that is inconsistant with his being doubtful of the usefulness of some sections and their level of detail. He may never had to write an exegesis paper for a graduate level course on a biblical subject. Of course, I am giving away my point of view. That said, I would NEVER recommend this book, or any one of its volumes to the casual reader who wanted to know something about Revelation. I would not even recommend the Word series for pastors. For that, there are lots of really good books, such as Ben Witherington's social commmentary or Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza's feminist leaning commentary, or best of all, Bruce Metzger's "Breaking the Code".

The Word series is for professors who teach in seminaries, and who deal with deep textual and translational problems. This is especially true of Aune's three volumes.That is as long as Nolland's 3 volumes on the Gospel of Luke, which is longer book in the Bible. Part of this may be due to the fact that Revelation may be the most poorly written book in the Greek New Testament. Even as late as Erasmus' 1516 edition of the Greek NT, we did not have good sources for the whole book. Erasmus filled in the gaps by back translating parts from St. Jerome's Latin translation. (These missing Greek pieces have since been found. Jerome did NOT make those parts up.)

I have used several different works in the Word commentary series, alway with some other commentary open at the same time. Almost invariably, the Word contribution is more even handed, more thorough, and more accurate in avoiding far fetched theories about the text. Aune, however, does stray from this standard in a big way with his theory, ably described in Mr. Garrow's review. I will also agree with Mr. Garrow's review of the first volume, and his source, Dr. Richard Bauckham, that unlike the Gospel of John, for example, Revelation is probably the result of a single hand, maybe not all in one sitting, but that would help to explain the atrocious Greek.

Reading Word commentaries can be a bit tedious, but if you are looking for information on an especially detailed matter in the text, this is the place to come. I think library search software may someday replace the Word series, but that time has not yet come.

I would recommend it mainly for those engaged in deeper academic research ...

I purchased all three volumes for the work I am doing on my graduate degree. Aune's commentary is extremely thorough and as you can see from the multiple volumes available, rather lengthy. This is not a commentary for those wishing only to do a basic study of the text for a church Bible study or sermon. I would recommend it mainly for those engaged in deeper academic research of the book of Revelation. I gave it four stars out of five only because it is fully useful only to a certain number of people.

Garry makes easy understanding of some of the most difficult relationship concepts.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

What the teacher wanted at a phenomenal price

My son started piano and thr books are not cheap. So the teaCher said find them online, don't pay retail bc we will be onto the next book in no time. I usually go to Thriftbooks.com for my books but this book was only the coat of shipping plus one cent. You can't beat that! This was used but all the pages were intact, just a little writing in the margin, which interested my son more than anything else. Great deal. The book itself is one that the teacher likes to work with for beginner to intermediate. The have many in the series. This is our fourth.

About the Author
BRUCE PEARSON is a world-renowned music educator, author, composer, and clinician. He is the author of the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method regarded as the most important contribution to the field in the last three decades and the groundbreaking Best In Class Comprehensive Band Method. His latest contribution, co-authored with Ryan Nowlin, is the Tradition of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method. This next-generation performance-centered curriculum sets a new barre by seamlessly blending time-tested and innovative pedagogy with cutting-edge technology.

In addition to his band method books, Dr. Pearson co-authored, with Dean Sorenson, the Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble Method and the Standard of Excellence Advanced Jazz Ensemble Method. He is also well-known as a composer of many widely-performed compositions and arrangements for concert band and jazz ensemble. He has led clinics in all fifty of the United States and has been guest conductor and clinician, by invitation, of countries throughout the Pacific Rim, the Orient, Europe, and the Canadian provinces.

Bruce Pearson has taught at the elementary, junior high, high school, and college levels for over thirty years. In 2007, Dr. Pearson received St. Cloud State University s Distinguished Alumni Award. That same year he was recognized as the first Patron for the Maryborough Conference in Queensland, Australia. The American School Band Directors Association conferred on Dr. Pearson the 2014 Edwin Franko Goldman Award as a symbol of high esteem and respect, and as a measure of appreciation and gratitude for outstanding personal contributions to the school band movement. Dr. Pearson continues to serve as a guest lecturer, clinician, and conductor in addition to his work as a composer, arranger, and author.

About the Author
Peter C. Craigie was Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Calgary and was at work on the WBC volume on Jeremiah 1-25 at the time of his untimely death in September, 1985. He also has written The Book of Deuteronomy (Eerdmans and Hodder & Stoughton, 1976) and The Problem of War in the Old Testament (Eerdmans, 1978), as well as numerous articles on Ugaritic studies. Professor Craigie received the M.A. in Semitic languages from the University of Edinburgh, the Dip. Theol. from the University of Durham, the M.Th. from the University of Aberdeen, and the Ph.D. from McMaster University.

A scholarly and evangelical commentary

Here is what to expect with this commentary on Psalms 1-50:

- in-depth analysis of the purpose a psalm played in Israelite liturgy. Its purpose helps the reader today to better understand any psalm

- interaction with other ancient near eastern literature, when relevant

- textual notes on the Hebrew, with his own careful translation. He notes when the text is confusing, for example, but walks the reader through the issues

- a good section called "Comment," in which Craigie covers the important points, theology, and usage of the psalm

- and a concluding section called "Explanation" that connects the psalm to New Testament or Christian theology, to present-day concerns of Christians. He often says something helpful and edifying.

I recommend the volume highly. Even without knowledge of Hebrew, the reader will benefit from it. And for those with Hebrew and some background in the ancient near east (and in the historiography of this literature), it is probably the best, more recent work available.

Craigie's scholarship and perspective is extraordinary.

Peter Craigie was to write the entire commentary on Psalms. His untimely death left this legacy of inspiring, intelligent, faithful survey work of Psalms 1-50 in a commentary series that occassionally gives up scholarship for conservative bias.
This is a superb survey of Psalms interpretation, and his own reflection and hermeneutic is inspiring in the least. Use it above even the likes of Casemann, Mays, and Bruegemann.

An outstanding effort

The commentary by Peter Craigie's commentary on Psalms 1-50 is worth owning for a number of reasons. The introductory material (which is intended as an introduction to the book of Psalms as a whole), although not extremely long, contains valuable information on issues such as the origin of Psalmody in Israel, the compilation of the Psalter, the titles of the Psalms, the issue of authorship, the nature of Hebrew poetry and music, as well as other issues of interest.

Craigie then discusses each Psalm in turn. Following the format of the Word Biblical Commentary series as a whole, the commentary on each Psalm begins with a translation, followed by notes on that translation, then a section on "form/structure/setting," and finally sections commenting on the individual verses themselves and an explanation of the entire Psalm. While some of the information in the commentary is intended for the scholar (particularly one with a working knowledge of Hebrew), there is also much of value to pastors and laypersons who want to gain insight into the devotional value of the Psalms. Reading Craigie's comments on the first 50 Psalms will give one a greater appreciation of the message of these songs of the Israelites.
