Truth Hurts

I considered this a fascinating read, especially since it was published in 1991, and to see how the world and especially the U.S. has been "deceived" by the "self appointed" powers that be. Christians will clearly see the writing on the wall, whereas those who follow their own "humanism" theology will throw all the daggers and name calling, as seen in several reviews. The truth is rarely seen by "those" who set themselves on such high pedestals, but those who know the "Truth" will recognize it, and open their eyes to the deception which surrounds us. Robertson names names, connects dots, follows the money, and has an extensive bibliography and index for further reading, and to back up his words. Read the book, and don't be "put off" by those who "doth protest too much".

Provides insight into End Times

Great book! I wish I had read it 20+ years ago when I first heard of it. Now that I've read it, I understand more about why we are seeing the budget battles going on in D.C., wars in the Middle East, and other international events.
I see more clearly why many in our political sphere are working so hard to run up our national debt: to cause our nation's financial collapse, weaken our military, and eventually overthrow our country.
Furthermore, the book provides perspective on the relationship between (1) the driving force behind the anti-God, anti-America types who seek to disarm America and get us under the control of the U.N., and (2) the rise of the Antichrist. Any Christian seeking to understand how End-Time prophecies are being fulfilled in our day would benefit from reading this book.

Great way to introduce piano beginners to the best in classical music

I purchased this for my 4 year old.
He loves to play piano. He is hooked to the TV show Little Einsteins. He will ask me to play songs introduced in each episode of the show. While the actual pieces are very long and hard for a 4 year old's skill level, this books gives the highlight of each piece, which a beginner can play.
This book introduces over 25 composers to the little one.
While the book is recommended for adult beginner, if your child is into classical music this is great for a child as well.

Item arrived on time in excellent condition. Price was slightly cheaper in Amazon compared to other vendors.

Little more than a concordance

This is not a comprehensive theology on angels, but rather is a brief summary of basic biblical doctrines. Lightner strives to avoid controversial statements, so when a disputed passage arises, he essentially lays out the case for every evangelical Christian view point, rather than defending one particular view. For the most part, the book seeks to contrast what the Bible teaches about angels with what the new age culture teaches. There is a chart about how angels relate to the zodiac signs, and the book is dotted with anecdotes about angels from newspapers and TV shows. In fact, the most frustrating feature of the book is that while the author is passionate about showing how the only source of truth about angels is the Bible, this passion does not produce a depth of understanding beyond merely repeating what the Scriptures say about angels.
For example, Lightner asks if Christians have guardian angels. He then gives the different views in summary form, then repeats Matthew 18:10, and then moves on. Implications, exegesis, and a solid answer will simply not be found.
In fact, the most in depth and helpful part of the book is the excursus on Genesis 6. There Lightner explains the three major views, and helpfully gives their problems and his preferred view. Beyond this section though, that kind of deep research is lacking.
Lightner does believe that Christians cannot be possessed by demons, that angels were created by God, and that Satan is real and on the earth today. While he says the most comprehensive treatment of angels in the Bible is Hebrews 1-2, he deals with that passage in one paragraph, puts the phrase "the world to come" in the future millennium, ignores the connection to Psalm 8, and then moves on. In short, this book would be good for someone looking almost for an index about "where does the Bible teach `x' about angels," but would not be helpful for the person who wants to go deeper into angelology.

A Good Introduction to Angelology

I had to read this book as part of a systematic theology course in seminary, and I enjoyed the first half of it. No, it's not as in depth as it possibly could get, but the author does share his views so far as it makes sense for him to, and gives some good pastoral counsel. One thing I noticed is that the author seems to be a dispensational premillenialist which detracts a little from the value I give this book. Also, I was disappointed that the second half of the book seemed like a repeat of the first half. All in all, though, a good read if you have to read it for a class. I'd try to find something better (or maybe just stick to a systematic theology) if I were reading for my own enlightenment.

The 2-star review for this book is actually pretty accurate in terms of the content. There are a lot of Scripture references, and a lot of repeating what the Bible says, but not too much detailed exegesis. So if you're looking for something in depth, this is not what you're looking for. But if you're looking for an introduction, it's not bad.

I would recommend this book for all who are wondering about who angel were, their ministry, and Satan's rebellion.
it brings to light so many question and brings up more question of Genesis 6.

James Dunn (Ph.D., Cambridge) was for many years the Lightfoot Professor of Divinity in the Department of Theology at the University of Durham. Since his retirement he has been made Emeritus Lightfoot Professor. He is a leading British New Testament scholar, broadly in the Protestant tradition. Dunn is especially associated with the New Perspective on Paul, a phrase which he is credited with coining during his 1982 Manson Memorial Lecture.

His books include Did the First Christians Worship Jesus? (2010), The New Perspective On Paul (2007), A New Perspective On Jesus: What The Quest For The Historical Jesus Missed (2005),The Theology of Paul the Apostle (1998), The Acts of the Apostles (1996), and The Epistles to the Colossians and to Philemon (1996).  In 2005, a festschrift dedicated to Dunn was published, entitled The Holy Spirit and Christian origins: essays in honor of James D. G. Dunn, comprising articles by 27 New Testament scholars, examining early Christian communities and their beliefs about the Holy Spirit.

A reference book for any serious student of the N.T.

Commentaries are written with a variety of audiences in mind. Some are pitched at a "popular" level; they are accessible to Christians who do not have a degree in theology (and they may not be very helpful, since they tend to rehearse familiar ideas). Some are a little meatier, intended to aid preachers in sermon preparation. And some are written at an academic level; they debate the positions of other scholars.
The Word Biblical Commentary series tries to address both of the latter two audiences. The commentaries provide assistance to scholars, preachers, and other serious students of the Bible.
Word imposes a rigid format. Authors must begin each passage with a bibliography, followed by a translation with notes on the Greek manuscripts. Next there is a "form and structure" section which discusses grammatical and thematic links with other passages and calls attention to the literary techniques employed by the biblical author. Next there is a "comment" section which is quite detailed, allowing some room for interaction with other scholars. Finally there is an "explanation" section, which summarizes the message of the text without repeating all the technical details.
Word's format inevitably introduces some repetition. For busy preachers, the trick is to zero in on the explanation section. Preachers will value the other sections of the commentary when there is a theological or textual problem which merits closer examination.
Dunn's commentary succeeds brilliantly at both levels. Dunn is a leading authority in Pauline studies. His "new perspective on Paul" builds on the work of E. P. Sanders and has attracted the attention of scholars including N. T. Wright. He is bound to have his academic audience in mind at points in a commentary on Romans.
But Dunn also put a great deal of thought into the explanation section of this work. He describes his approach in the author's preface. When he began to write, he concentrated on the explanation section of chapters 1-11 for two years. During that time, he restricted himself to only a few technical aids, in order to maintain a focus on the broad message of Romans rather than the technical details primarily of interest to scholars.
The result is a reference book that any serious student of the New Testament will find helpful. Many readers will read only the explanation section most of the time. But the Word commentaries are relatively inexpensive, so Dunn's two volumes on Romans are still good value for the money.

Excellent Commentary on Romans 1-8

I am a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity with Biblical Languages). I preach at least twice a month, in addition to writing one paper per month. This is all in addition to my paying job as an Engineer. Because my time is at such a premium, I am always glad to try different commentaries on the Greek and Hebrew texts. Some of you may use a commentary differently than I do. For me, a commentary is my last stop before I write the sermon (or paper). First comes all my own reading and translating of the text. Then I compare my translation to the main English translations (NASB, NEV, NIV, KJV). After all that work, then comes time to read some commentaries.

This is the first volume of the WBC that I have ever tried. Therefore, I cannot speak for the series. This particular volume is very helpful. The author (James Dunn) does an outstanding job of listing all his references. He provides a survey of the opinions of a multitude of Bible scholars, before offering his own opinion. This is precisely how a commentator should write a commentary. Even though I do not agree with every conclusion that Dunn makes, I very much appreciate the amount of work which went into this volume.

For those of you are familiar with the EBC (Expositor's Bible Commentary), the WBC (Word Biblical Commentary) on Romans has more survey of what other writers have said and less analysis of the Greek words. Both commentaries are useful and both have their shortcomings. If you are a full-time preacher (or professor) and have time to read all the original source materials from commentator throughout the ages, this volume might not be for you. However, for the rest of us, this volume is a wonderful source of (a) seeing what other commentators have said (b) gaining a less linguistically analytical view of the Greek text and (c)being challenged to think about Dunn's comments.

Do I recommend this book? Yes, but only for those people who are going to go read Romans first, and then read this commentary.

Very complete!

This is a great commentary for students and those who have deeper study needs. Dunn is well-known and presents information to help the student understand the first part of Romans.

About the Author
Growing up as the daughter of piano teacher Gladys Smisor, Jane began her childhood lessons with Leota Anderson in Hutchinson, Kansas. After graduating from Barnard College of Columbia University, she continued her studies with Isabelle Vengerova in New York, and received a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jane Smisor Bastien was formerly a pedagogy professor and director of the Preparatory Department of Music at Tulane University, where she had an opportunity to extensively research current methodology in developing the Bastien teaching materials for children.

Because she still teaches a large number of students in her home in La Jolla (San Diego), Jane's composing continues to be directly related to her own students' experiences. She knows what appeals to contemporary children and writes music that they will find fun to play. In recognition of their significant contribution to music and music education, Jane and her husband James Bastien were presented with the 1999 MTNA Lifetime Achievement Award.

I teach piano and find that this is one of the best teaching tools out there

I have used Bastien Piano books for many years. I teach piano and find that this is one of the best teaching tools out there. The lessons are bright and the print is large enough for these old tired eyes to see the lessons. I still have a couple of the older books that I use for some of the students to use because there are some things in the older book that helps some of the students to understand the lessons in that book and aren't as successful in the newer version.

In this long-awaited novel, Peretti (This Present Darkness; The Visitation) tells the story of a young woman who disappears in the Idaho wilderness and the ensuing search for her. The author's prose is clear and crisp, with only a few lapses into Lovecraftian hyperbole: his description of the novel's almost mythical setting is rich and detailed without being overwritten and his characterization of the woman, Beck, and the very unusual creatures she encounters is compelling. Peretti successfully incorporates several contemporary detective drama/suspense thriller tropes; one of his main characters, for example, is a crime scene investigator, and welcome doses of forensic evidence and DNA analysis are thrown into the mix. But the novel suffers from too many supporting characters, and Peretti's failure to develop them greatly compromises the conclusion. More problematic, though, is the novel's agenda with regard to the theory of evolution. Not raised overtly until the middle of the book, Peretti's critique of certain aspects of Darwinism eclipses the story and leads it to an unsatisfying and somewhat confusing end. As in Peretti's previous novels, those who hold conservative views are portrayed as heroic and those who disagree as evil. The novel's devolution into this simplistic moralism, however, will not keep Peretti fans away, and its many merits may attract other readers as well. 400,000 first printing. (Apr. 12)

Policeman Reed Shelton is guiding his wife, Rebecca ("Beck"), on a no-frills wilderness hike when a strange being attacks them, and they are separated. Bloodied and shaken, Reed crawls back for help, thinking Beck is probably dead. But she's been kidnapped by a band of apelike creatures that may embody what the people of backcountry Idaho tell their tall tales about: Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch. Or there may be another explanation: renegade researchers have been fiddling with DNA and have altered the offspring of chimpanzees into "monster" form. The monsters have escaped. This kind of thing--trying to improve upon God's creation--is red meat to Peretti's evangelical readers, but he doesn't develop the issue. Instead, he pumps up the suspense as a hunt is mounted to find Beck, but since the reader pretty much knows her fate, the suspense seems mechanical. When the true "monster" is revealed, he (or she) has little time on stage, and Peretti's argument about DNA more or less falls away. Peretti has so many readers that his new novel belongs in every library, but he was better off writing about the weight of sin, as he did in The Oath (1995). As for the evangelical take on DNA research, try Sigmund Brouwer's The Double Helix (1995). It's better informed and more suspenseful. John Mort

"During survival training in the wilderness, policeman Reed Shelton and his wife, Beck, are attacked and separated by unidentified creatures. Reed’s voice is tremulous as he describes what happened. Peretti narrates his own imaginative story of Sasquatch, DNA mutations, cruel experiments, and cold-blooded murder. But his delivery is dry and raspy, with an unpleasant pitch and tone, even though he depicts realistic shouts, shots, and screams. His portrayal of Sasquatch’s speech--grunts, tongue clicks, and a variety of growls--borders on the comical. Furthermore, Beck's vocalizations as she assimilates into the tribe bends credulity. Peretti fans will like this, but less imagination and an abridgment would make this more enjoyable for others."

Evil exists

A great book featuring bigfoot, monsters, a missing camper, a missing survival instructor, academic intrigue and more. I don't like spoilers so no plot details from me but there is more than one kind of monster. Some of them are real and live among us hiding their true, evil natures.

You're right there in the forest with Beck and the exquisite creatures! Great character building! Would love more adventures with these folks! How about a series of 15 or 20 adventures!!! I'd buy them ALL, Frank Peretti!
