Great ideas to implement

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Fun and simple book!

My 9 year old daughter just started taking piano lessons last year, so we purchased this Piano for the Young Beginner Primer A paperback book for her. Her piano teacher, who has been playing and teaching the piano for 20 years, highly recommends Bastein books for learning on. This is the only brand we will buy for our daughter since she is learning so easily with them. The book has pretty good illustrations too. These songs are easy for her to master and are helping her grow at a good pace. It took her a couple months to master all the songs. The levels of the book make it easy to figure out which book to buy next.

Great starter piano method for young children

I use this method exclusively for my younger students ages 5 & 6. The children love the songs because they are easy to play, recognizable, while some are original and they can also sing along while they play. The method also helps develop a child's ability to read and write music. I would strongly recommend buying the accompanying books because they can be very helpful to the learning process.

I am a music teacher and this series is one of my favorites. I teach children 3-9 in this series up through level 2. Its very teacher, student and parents friendly and keeps the student moving at a fun and quick pace.

About the Author
Growing up as the daughter of piano teacher Gladys Smisor, Jane began her childhood lessons with Leota Anderson in Hutchinson, Kansas. After graduating from Barnard College of Columbia University, she continued her studies with Isabelle Vengerova in New York, and received a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jane Smisor Bastien was formerly a pedagogy professor and director of the Preparatory Department of Music at Tulane University, where she had an opportunity to extensively research current methodology in developing the Bastien teaching materials for children.

Because she still teaches a large number of students in her home in La Jolla (San Diego), Jane's composing continues to be directly related to her own students' experiences. She knows what appeals to contemporary children and writes music that they will find fun to play. In recognition of their significant contribution to music and music education, Jane and her husband James Bastien were presented with the 1999 MTNA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Hart explains anhedonia as the reduced ability to experience
pleasure. The lack of the ability to experience pleasure affects every
aspect of our lives: sexuality, addictions, relationships,
spirituality... He shares how the fast paced lives we live and the
increasing numbers of electronic gadgets we use in our day to day
lives rob us of the ability to feel pleasure and cause us to feel numb
to everything except the most extreme pleasure eliciting activities.
Where as in the past anhedonia was only seen in clients with major
depression or other severe mental illnesses it is more and more common
to see it as the illness and not just a symptom.

Dr. Hart shows in several simple diagrams how the feeling of pleasure
is lost as anhedonia develops due to over stimulation and a flooding
of dopamines which raises the threshold barrier that enjoyment must
cross in order to reach the pleasure center of the brain, requiring
major pleasures which are commonly found in drugs and other addicting
behaviors to cross the high threshold. This brings to mind an often
quoted "law" stated in my family home the "law of diminishing returns"
which in simple terms is the fact that the first candy bar always
taste far better than the 2nd, 5th, 10th... I wonder if this could be
attributed to the pleasure center's threshold being raised by each
successive candy bar eaten. As more is learned about our brains and
how they work is discovered and researched it is becoming apparent
that the ability to feel pleasure and feelings of happiness with your
life are closely intertwined.

I found it useful and insightful that Dr. Hart included many self
tests: stress level, internet addiction, test for anhedonia, laughter,
anhedonia in children, multitasking addiction, emotional eating... To
help the reader gauge where they fall in needing to put the second
half of the book to use in their life where Dr. Hart gives seven steps
in the recovery process of being able to experience pleasure even in
life's smallest pleasure giving moments.

The seven steps are: 1. Seek the right form of pleasure 2. Recapture
the joy of little things 3. Control your adrenaline 4. Use humor to
enhance your happiness 5. Develop appreciation and gratitude 6. Master
relaxation and meditation 7. Make space for things that matter.

If you or someone you love has been experiencing a lack of feelings
towards things that used to give you pleasure or you find in general
you feel numb much of the time this is the book you are looking for
although you might not have known it. I especially think it would be a
helpful read for parents as they evaluate what is important in their
children's lives to keep and what to opt out of for the health of
their children and themselves.

Dr. Hart explains "anhedonia"--the psychological disorder of thinking too much about what pleases us. Habitually pursuing pleasure can leave us numb, even as we remain unaware of the progression. As we continue to think about what pleases us...then we get what we think will please us and it disappoints. Unsatisfied, unhappy, unfulfilled, we become dead people inside a breathing body. Very important book for personal growth!

Great Book

This is an important book, by a distinguished scholar. Everyone should read this book. It is extremely well written, clear and easy to understand, despite the neuroscience. The message is convincing -- we are thrilling ourselves to death, wearing out the pleasure circuits in the brain with more and more stimulation, and ruining our potential for happiness for years to come, maybe forever. We need to get back to the little pleasures in life.

This fluffy fellow is not part of traditional Sunday school discussions, yet every spring he makes an appearance in the forms of animated characters, marshmallow treats, and holiday stories. When three children begin to question their dad about the connection between the Easter Bunny and the real Easter, he tells them about Jesus being killed on the cross and his resurrection. "The Easter Bunny has nothing to do with the real Easter. The Easter Bunny--along with new leaves and flowers and new baby kittens and baby chicks--is part of how we celebrate spring. But that's all. Spring is God's picture of Jesus rising from the dead as all of nature comes to life again."

About the Author

Born in Camden, New Jersey, Harold Myra is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Christianity Today, Inc., which publishes Christianity Today, Campus Life, and Today's Christian Woman, and other outstanding Christian periodicals. His Bachelor of Science degree is from East Stroudsburg University (PA), and he has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from John Wesley College, Biola University, and Gordon College. He has taught writing and publishing at the Graduate School at Wheaton College. Harold lives in Illinois with his wife Jeanette. They have six children and three grandchildren.

Jane Kurisu has worked as a freelance illustrator in graphic design in Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles. Her whimsical art has been featured in a wide variety of media from periodicals to children's books. She currently lives in Toronto with her husband and two children.

This is a good fun book to teach younger children about the reason ...

This is a good fun book to teach younger children about the reason we celebrate Easter. I enjoyed how the older brother taught his younger brother and parents how we should go to church to celebrate Easter instead of thinking about the Easter Bunny and candy. I don't have any small children in my house right now. I do teach six year olds at church, but we didn't have church at our local church building. It was our Genral Conference so we watched on TV, (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) We did talk about Easter the Sunday before, I didn't have time to talk about the book. I think it is a good book and can be read to small children every year at Easter time.

Easter Bunny: Are You for Real

This book is an excellent choice for any three (3) to eight (8) year old. It is an especially appropriate choice for a christian family that would like to teach its children about their religious reasons for celebrating Easter. I like the tie-in to the secular message since that is what our children see all around them. The illustrations are very nice and are sure to please your young child. I believe that this is a wonderful addition to our library. It makes the perfect Easter basket gift. My three (3) year-old is the lucky recipient this Easter. I have four (4) children and several hundred childrens titles in our home. I think the whole family will enjoy this book as a read-aloud book.

Share Christ's resurrection without killing the Easter Bunny

Every year I get my girls a book concerning Christ'sresurrection to try and counterbalance the commercialism of Eastertime. However, this year I am excited about offering a book that does more than just show the counterpoint to the Easter Bunny. Mr. Myra does a great job of addressing issues of secular Easter (i.e., bunny, eggs, baby chicks) within the context of the Christian Easter. What a delight to find that this book did not deny or disparage the Easter Bunny (and the joy my 6 year old gets in believing), but rather put this (as well as other traditions i.e., egg coloring, etc.) in the context of spring and Christ's resurrection. I highly recommend this book to Christian parents who want to share the glories of Christ's resurrection without squelching the childhood joys of an Easter Bunny.
