This book brings together an international cast of experts from around the world: France, Australia, Japan, United States, Austria to present their latest research findings. As such, this book represents the state of the art on research into mollicutes. The book is broken down into three sections, one each on Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and finally Pathogenicity and Control.

Of particular concern is those bacteria that can infect humans, animals and plants. The treatment of these varies from studies done down at the gene sequencing level to studies conducted in attempts to relate mycoplasmas to diseases such as AIDS or Gulf War Veterans Illness.

The material in this book is new enough that it needs to be viewed as a snapshot of the technology as it exists today. Much of this material will be consolidated into accepted theories over time and will eventually become standard information. At this time, however, this is the best information that we have on this rapidly changing field.

A Good Bible Study and Lessons from the Life of King David

I've always admired Dr. Chuck Swindoll's radio ministry, as I believe he preaches the unadulterated Word of God. His Insights For Living are lessons I have carefully listened to and tried to apply to my own life. A while back, I recall him doing a series of radio programs on the life of King David, and I believe those programs resulted in him writing this book.

I heartily recommend this book to those who desire a study of King David and his life and times. Swindoll takes his information directly from Kings and Chronicles, and considers the life of David from when he was a young boy tending his father's sheep, to an old man of 70, about to die. Swindoll tells King David's story and the lessons Christians can learn from the most written about person in the entire Old Testament. Swindoll is a list-maker, and in each chapter he provides a list of key ideas or lessons to be learned by King David's attitude or actions that are applicable to believers today. For example, what kind of mindset is required to face down a giant challenge, such as a Goliath? What does it mean to be "A man after God's own heart?" How can a man of faith commit adultery and then have a man murdered in order to steal his wife? What should our response be with our children rebel against us? These and many more questions are asked and answered in Swindoll's book.

I am using this book as a nightly Bible study and I can hardly wait to get to bed to read another chapter. I have enjoyed this book so much that I will likely purchase the next book in his series on Biblical characters.

I knew very little about King David before beginning this study, and as I come to the conlcusion of the book, I feel I know the general outlicne of David's life so much better, and have improved insights into his personality, his struggles, his moral failings, and his faith in his God. David's life is one of great contrasts. Since he is the most written about person in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit must want us to learn about this Man of God, and learn how he failed and how he suceeded in his walk of faith.

This is not a difficult book to read. Swindoll writes for the average reader, yet has insights and clarity that will benefit the church deacon or pastor. I most highly recommend this book as a great starting point to learn about the greatest King of Israel.

A good book that studies the life of David, from the Bible.

No other Old Testament figure has as many pages written about him as David, the second king of Israel. This book has many insightful looks into King David, who, is a figure of Christ Himself. I recommend any of the "great lives" series by Chuck Swindol.

They are always insightful, accurate, and help along the way of understanding our Lord Jesus Christ. You will get a whole new picture of Christ through the life of David, and, if you are saved this will be an immediate treasure for you. If you are not saved, this book points you to Bible verses where you can read about the great sacrifice a kind, loving, merciful God made that we can have the hope someday we may be saved asa well.

Good book for both believers and non-believers alike. Check out all the "great lives" series of books to help you learn and grow as a Christian. Much scripture is in these books- and it's the BIBLE that can lead us to Christ (faith commeth though hearing and hearing through the WORD OF GOD)...........Romans 10:17

The authors focus on further biochemical operations in which microorganisms grow attached to solid surfaces, adding complexity to the analysis, even though the operations are often simpler in application. They conclude with a look to the future, introducing the fate and effects of xenobiotic and trace contaminants in wastewater treatment systems and examining how the application of biochemical operations can lead to a more sustainable world.

Great Book

I have been using Metcalf and Eddy for a long time untill I came across this book. I love this book. It uses symbols that matches ASM models and explain the material very smoothly and easy to understand. Overall, I like this book better than Metcalf.

If you are an environmental engineer, you should have this book in your bookshelf.

More suited for tweens than teens, but still a helpful guide to the basics

This book compiles 100 Bible verses that are not important just to teens, but to all believers. Following every verse is a two-page explanation on how it can apply to everyday life. For instance, walking unashamed of Christ may require going against peer pressure. The commentaries are well-written, but they are very short due to the large font used. This may be good for readers with short attention spans, but I would have preferred just a bit more depth, even from a quick read.

Also, I think the content is relatively simple. For teens who grew up in a religious household, there will be little new content here. I would recommend this book more for tweens or young teens, people aged from ten to fourteen. Any older and I think this book is a bit too simple. However, for young people new to the Christian religion, I could definitely see this book teaching them the basics in a straightforward, accessible manner.

About the Author

John Nolland is Vice Principal and Head of Biblical Studies as well as Lecturer in New Testament Studies at Trinity Collge, Bristol, England. He holds S.Sc. (Hons.) from University of New England (Australia), the Th.L. from the Australian College of Theology, The B.D. from the University of London, the Ph.D. from Cambridge University, and the Dip.Th. from Moore Theological College. His numerous articles have been published in Revue de Qumran, The journal of Theological Studies, Vigiliae Christianae, Journal of Biblical Literature, Novum Testamentum, New Testament Studies, and The Journal for the Study of Judaism.

A Solid, Straight-Forward Commentary

Part of the World Biblical Commentary, John Nolland's commentary on Luke 1-9:20 is a solid, straight-forward contribution to the field. The introduction covers the basics, concluding -- somewhat tentatively -- that Luke the companion of Paul is the author. Nolland more firmly concludes that Luke was written between the late sixties and late seventies. Though competent, the introduction is a more generalized treatment of the issues. If you are looking for in-depth discussions of authorship and dating, then another commentary (Ellis or Fitzmyer) would probably serve you better.

The section by section discussion of the text is the strength of this commentary. Each section is introduced with a helpfully extensive Bibliography unique to the topic at hand. Nolland then provides a translation of the text, followed by Form/Structure/Setting. The latter discusses the outline of the section, as well as issues like sources and purpose. This section is followed by the "Comment." A real strength, Nolland here moves through the section passage by passage with a consistent discussion of the Greek. The focus on the Greek should not be intimidating, because Nolland handles it clearly. Though some commentators neglect (or choose not) to provide the English translation of each specific Greek term, Nolland usually does, so the layperson can place the Greek in context as he reads through. Also, Nolland often relates it to usage elsewhere in the New Testament and sometimes beyond. All in all, the passage by passage exegesis and discussion is definitely above-average.

Nolland concludes each section with an Explanation which brings all of his points together.

Though not rich in "extras", this commentary is solid and a very helpful resource for studying the text of the Gospel of Luke.

A solid academic commentary on Luke's Gospel

This is a good solid commentary, though expensive (it's a three volume set). But Nolland has many good insights, and despite the all too brief introduction, it is a valuable addition to your library if you're studying the Gospel of Luke. My only other complaint is that the Explanation section merely repeats key sentences in the commentary section without giving any further practical wisdom.

About the Author

Dr. Douglas Stuart is Professor of Old Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusettes.  He is senior pastor of First Church Congregational in Boxford, Massachusettes.  Dr. Stuart is the author of articles in major journals and magazines and has written several major commentaries on the Old Testament prophetical books.  He is the best-seller author of a book on exegetical method and co-author of a best-selling introduction of hermeneutics.  He and his wife, Gayle, have eight children.

Difficult task

I have often thought that one of the most difficult tasks that a biblical scholar must face is trying to write a one-volume commentary on several books of the Bible. This is especially true when the only obvious linkage is that they are found consecutively in our English Bible. Douglas Stuart appears to have done an excellent job of providing a scholarly but readable and lively commentary on the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Jonah. Despite the fact that he has tackled five books that have divergent (although not entirely unrelated) themes and different settings, Stuart has provided us with commentaries on each of these books that are insightful and scholarly. Needless to say, more space is given to the longer books (Hosea covers approximately 220 pages of text versus just 21 for Obadiah), but none receives short shrift.

The introductory material to each of these prophets is enlightening, and while not extremely detailed, provides the reader with a decent amount of background material. The more technical matters regarding the Hebrew text are generally set apart in the "Notes" section that follows immediately upon the English translation of a passage, and any Hebrew in the commentary section itself is accompanied by an English translation, meaning that a working knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary for fully benefitting from the commentary. The commentary section (as well as the introductions) provides not just interpretation of the text but, where important, crucial background information regarding geography, culture, societal practices, and the like. (For example, in the commentary on Amos there is a significant amount of material that enables us to better understand the nature of the practices that Amos is condemning.)

I highly recommend this commentary to anyone seeking to gain a greater knowledge of one or more of these five books.

Excellent commentary!

This is one of the best commentaries you could buy for these minor prophets. Douglas Stuart does an excellent job expositing the texts of each book. I bought this mainly for Hosea, but have been thankful to have excellent evangelical scholarship applied to Joel and Jonah as well. I highly recommend this for your library.

Excellent commentary on five of the Minor Prophets

BEST Warm-Up/Technique book for bands around!

I use these books to warm up community band that I conduct nearly every rehearsal. The exercises prepare each musician comprehensively... and they are structured in such a way that no section is left bored while others focus on specific skills.

The chorales in this book are BEAUTIFUL, and I really enjoy that the warm-ups go beyond the standard flat "band keys". All-together an indespensible book.

Tate's not Craigie

Peter Craigie was supposed to have done a commentary on all the Psalms but as has been mentioned, "his untimely death" prevented that from happening. Two other writers completed the task: Marvin Tate for Psalms 51-100, Leslie Allen for 101-150.

One of the reviewers referred to Craigie's work as "scholarly and evangelical." Another called it an "inspiring, intelligent, and faithful survey." I agree completely. When I saw that Craigie had done a commentary on the Psalms, I immediately purchased volume 19 in this series because I had previously used his commentary on Deuteronomy and found it invaluable in a two-year series of Bible studies we did on Deuteronomy.

I figured the editors of the series must have tried to maintain consistency when Tate and Allen continued Craigie's work.

I am not as happy with Tate's volume as I was with Craigie's. Of course, this volume is full of scholarly notes on the text and the language and the theological/literary/historical/liturgical contexts of the psalms. As was Craigie's volume. However, Tate, in his commendable effort to bring a great quantity of detailed information about each psalm's theological/literary/historical/liturgical context, often left me with the impression that there is no clear idea of what the psalm was meant to do. Psalm after psalm is analyzed in this way. While the application of the Scripture is not necessarily the main task of a commentary, I found Craigie's approach less abstract, more practical. Tate also seems rather fond of pointing out in his explanations how psalms relate to "old mythical ideas." And the point of that is . . . ?

If I read Calvin, Luther, Boice, or Craigie on the Psalms, I am informed and edified. I greatly appreciate the detailed knowledge that Tate provides, but often, after reading Tate, I had no feel for the effect that the psalms actually had not only on Israel but on Christians over the centuries.

I bought volume 20 (Tate) in this series because of Craigie's volume 19. I have found the information in Tate helpful at times, and I know that whatever the Lord does is right and best, but I tend to wish that Craigie had been allowed to complete the commentary.
