MacArthur (pastoral ministries, Master's Seminary, Los Angeles) has produced a reference work packed with study aids. It includes a general introduction to the Bible and how to study it, introductions to each of the books of the Bible (including an outline of the book's contents), a topical index, a set of color maps, comparative time lines, and more. The bulk of the work is devoted to MacArthur's copious notes on the text of the Bible. Few study Bibles contain as much commentary as this one, and the commentary is decidedly and unapologetically conservative and premillennial. This is most obvious in the author's emphasis on the literal interpretation of Scripture and his prophecy/fulfillment approach to much of the Old Testament. The latter aspect is at times so prominent that it detracts from understanding the Old Testament in its own right. Also, though he encourages taking the Bible literally, MacArthur deviates where he needs to. If you're looking for a study Bible -- this is the one!

The MacArthur Study Bible is by far the best study Bible on the market. I own several study Bibles (NIV Study Bible, Life Application Study Bible, Old Scofield Study Bible, Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible, Nelson's King James Study Bible, Praise and Worship Study Bible, The Comparative Study Bible, etc.). I can say, without a doubt, that the notes in the MacArthur Study Bible are the finest to be found anywhere. When studying a particular passage of scripture in various commentaries (e.g. The NIV Bible Commentary [i.e., the condensation of the Expositor's Bible Commentary], Tyndale NT Commentaries, Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible, and the Believer's Bible Commentary), I often find that MacArthur's treatment (in his study Bible) is more detailed!! In all cases, MacArthur reaches a sound conclusion. I have yet to find any theologically unsound teaching in this Bible. MacArthur expounds the Word the way it was meant to be expounded - with clarity, with scholarship, and with a belief in the infallibility of God's inspired Word. Everything in this Bible is top notch. In addition to the abundance of commentary, many other helps are found, e.g. a section on "How We Got The Bible," a section on "How to Study The Bible," wonderful chronological charts, a section entitled "Overview of Theology," etc., etc.. In short, the MacArthur Study Bible has everything other study Bibles (i.e., the ones mentioned above) have, plus more! Additionally, the actual page layout is quite appealing to the eye -- unlike some study Bibles. Also, the book introductions are among the best I have seen.
The New King James Version is an excellent translation. Serious students of the Bible will find the marginal manuscript variation notes invaluable!
I would give the MacArthur Study Bible an unconditionable recommendation to anyone looking for a study Bible giving a detailed treatment of the Word.

I have had many study Bibles, but this is far the best. It combines Scripture with both a concordance, extensive cross-referencing, and MacArthur's own commentary. It goes to great length to explore the meaning of words and phrases through their original languages. I highly recommend this Bible to anyone serious about studying (not just reading) God's Word.

I cannot imagine a more complete Bible Study than John MacArthur's edition. Also I cannot imagine any other single reference tome to contain so much information for the price of this one. It is truly a must for any serious Bible student or potential Bible student. It is beautifully bound in a leatherette cover.

So Good, Yet So Aweful

The only possible rating that you can give this book is 5 of 5... not many people know of it, or would care to. If you believe and follow God you will be absolutely scared of this book. This is about Ethics that hell uses. All I can say is it is a must read only if you can truely forgive humankind for being what they really are.

Sweet & Simple

"Salvation" by Dr. Radmacher is a wonderful study of all God has done for mankind expressed through His Son, Jesus Christ. It well written and is easy to read and understand. The book emphasizes God's plan of salvation in all of its aspects and how we receive this gift by simple belief. God's grace is emphasized throughout the book and was a reminder that God's greatness is expressed in providing us a way of relationship with Him without lowering His perfect standards to let us in. Theological terms are defined throughout the text and explained so that any reader will grasp their meaning and importance. Also, one is not left guessing as to where the author stands on any point. This book is a great study and should be very helpful to new or growing believers. I highly recommend it.

Dr. Earl Radmacher of Western Seminary in Portland, OR does a maginficent job in describing all parts and facets of this word salvation in the book titled the same. Salvation is the message of all of Scripture and is the very reason for our hope and faith in Christ alone for it. The words of the Phillipian jailer resonate throughout the ages, "What must I do to be saved"? Dr. Radmacher does a thorough job of answering that question as well as the other aspects of salvation such as sanctification, temporal deliverance and glorification. If you are seeking to better understand this often misused and misunderstood word Dr. Radmacher's book is for you. I would encourage all students of the Scripture to pick this one up. Its a must for any library.

I read Dr Radmacher's Book "Salvation" a few years ago. It is excellent and fairly easy to read. Radmacher is very precise, acurate and holds the readers attention. DR Radmacher has spoken at bible conferneces at my church three different times. As a speaker he is captivating , brilliant and loves God's Word! If you ever get a chance to hear him don't miss it!

From the gentle heart of a Shepherd

Pastor Erwin Lutzer, now pastor of historic Moody Church for almost 25 years (following Warren Wiersbe's pastorate there), feeds the people of God through this profound, yet easily understood volume.
Having sat under his ministry for more than two years, week in and week out, Pastor Lutzer preached the truths of Scripture with compassion, clarity, and conviction. He does the very same with this volume.
In a culture that has made God whatever they want Him to be, this clarion call to Biblical Christianity could not be more urgent than it already is! Thinking Christians will want to research the Scriptural references themselves (just as the early Christians did) and see if these things are so.

A FINE ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN THE HUMAN CONDITION

Ten Lies About God is a fine, modern-day summation of several years of studies that leading Christian authorities have undertaken in order to explain who God is and isn't. Throughout the chapters are themes or lies embraced throughout the world that contain messages that either misidentify or misappropriate the attributes of Almighty God. For instance, in our Western society, there is such a primary focus on the so-called good life that God is a god of materialism and financial prosperity, and many have come to believe that this God is described in the Bible. However, Lutzer offers a serious rebuttal to this concept; on page 7, he cites, "It would be difficult indeed to convince the martyrs of the church that it was actually their God-given right to be healthy and prosperous; they would have been content with poverty, if only they had been delivered from the lion's mouth or the assassin's sword."
Not only does Lutzer point out each lie and then contrast it with the viewpoints of the 1st Century Christians, he also attempts to explain, whether it is from a scriptural or sociological point of view, why so many false ideas have come to exist. He says that, in essence, we are of an idolatrous nature and that the kinds of ideas about God that one constructs or misconstructs is a reflection of the condition of his or her heart.
Though Lutzer does not take on the burden of expaining the myriads of hardships and sufferings that have existed throughout man's history, he nonetheless states that God has our best interests at heart and that His ways are not always to be comprehended. In sum, Lutzer says that this is where the elements are faith are drawn, for it is when God is acting in such a way that seems contrary to our perception of His nature that we must acknowledge that He loves us and that many of His purposes will continue to be a mystery until the next life.

Lots of potential, but ultimately mediocre

Lutzer chose a very good title and a very good premise for writing this book. And while there were parts of the book that were quite good, he ultimately tried to bite off more than he could chew with this book in my view.
Lutzer's premise for the book is that there are ten 'lies' about God that he intends to analyze and refute. These lies are indeed attention grabbing and successfully generate interest in the reader to read what Lutzer has to say. Unfortunately in my view, in order to really do justice to many of these 'lies', much more than a chapter of examination is desperately in order. Whole books could be written on many of the lies that Lutzer attempts to contain within 20 page chapters, and the result is a book that doesn't dig nearly deep enough to do justice to the very compelling lies and subsequent questions that are asked in this book.
Each of the lies are the starting points for the chapters in the book. I think Lutzer did a good job of identifying many popularly held views about God. The lies in this book are quite pervasive throughout the culture and it is good that Lutzer attempted to discredit them. But all too often, I found that the chapters started out better than they ended, with Lutzer doing a good job of setting the table, but falling short in the quality of the meal. In particular, Lutzer repeatedly reinforced what I guess is a deeply held belief of his that I don't agree with, and it is this belief that often hurts the quality of his analysis, in my view. In my view, he too often takes the easy way out on tough questions related to purpose, suffering, creation, and omnipotence by essentially saying that good answers aren't available to these kind of questions. Lutzer makes what I believe to be a cardinal mistake in today's church by appealing not to a faith bolstered by intellectual sensibility and emotional satisfaction, but to a faith that at its core, is anti intellectual. As such, at several key points in his book where a solid, Biblically based intellectual and philosophical examination would not only be appropriate but very compelling as both an intellectual and emotional proposition, Lutzer punts by essentially saying 'I don't know' way too often. And this is the fundamental failure of the book. I guess I'm not sure why Lutzer felt it necessary to write a book about a number of compelling topics if he didn't have more meat to offer.
The ten 'lies' about God that Lutzer profiles are good and relevant topics for discussion. But unfortunately in my view, like most of the book, his ending points are not nearly as compelling as his starting points, where the reader is left with an appreciation of the immensity of God and how much we don't know, but no appreciation for how much God has revealed to us about Himself and how much we do know. And in my view, by falling short in his analysis of the ten lies in this way, he inadvertently goes a long way toward contributing to another lie about God - God is unknowable.
So in conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with appreciating the immensity of God. But for those who might pick up this book looking for tangible answers about the nature of God, His purposes, the reasons why things happen the way they do, I would suggest that they not base their whole analysis of these difficult issues to this book, and would commend them to additional research and examination of other books which more adequately address these areas. Because in my view, Lutzer simply doesn't do justice to many of these issues here. Readers who pick up this book to gain emotional solace or satisfaction on some of these issues may or may not find enough meat in here, but readers who turn to this book for intellectual sustenance on these issues will encounter too many chapters where the author at least flirts with anti intellectualism, and presents a God who too often doesn't reveal Himself or His purposes at all. And as a matter of both theology and emotional experience, I fundamentally take issue with this sentiment and believe it to be wholly inadequate to the God of the Bible and how He has revealed His purposes and holiness not only in Scripture but in the annals of human history in ways we can know and gain comfort and hope from.

So-so

After thoroughly enjoying Gordon Wenham's commentary on Genesis, also part of the Word Biblical Commentary series, I had great expectations of John Durham's commentary on Exodus. However, I was disappointed. Durham has almost no discussion of the historical background of the story and little on the literary structures within the text. He focuses almost entirely on his translation of the text and, frankly, as a Hebrew reader and speaker I find his translation extremely inelegant.

Still, the commentary provides some interesting insights and excellent bibliographic material.

This volume is certainly required reading for an in-depth study of Exodus, but it is far from the only reading one will have to do to gain an informed knowledge of the text (this is true of every commentary, but especially true of Durham). Durham has many excellent points and is very quotable, particularly in the "Form/Structure/Setting sections." He interacts with a wide range of scholarship, which is helpful when doing research and trying to track down sources. His rendering of the Hebrew is also very good, and often more can be gleaned from his translation notes than in the actual "Comment" section.

Unfortunately, the eager reader will also find considerable weaknesses. Although he mentions many views on the various issues, he rarely interacts with them. When he does, it often takes the form of simply dismissing the relevance of source critics for his purposes, rather than stating whether such views are probable or improbable, and if so, why. Also, his actual "Comment" sections are often woefully brief. More often than not, he groups three to six verses together, mentioning only one or two very general things about them, and then moves on.

I have been helped by owning this commentary, particularly in finding ideas as to how to express what the text is saying. But if you want to really get a grasp on what is out there in Exodus, you will also need Enns, Sarna, and Childs (although the latter expresses a style that he has abandoned in recent years). Of course, even then you will still need a hefty amount of articles, etc, to really stay current (IVP's Dictionary of the Pentateuch is helpful). Durham's WBC by itself won't satisfy.

Word Biblical Commentary -- Exodus

John Durham has provided a commentary in keeping with the rich tradition of the Word Biblical Commentary series. This 516 page commentary of Exodus presupposes the divine nature and inspiration of the text. While Durham gives information about sources of the finished text (Source Criticism), he approaches the text of a "Canonical" method, dealing with the text as it has come to us in its current form. His emphasis is on extracting the theological meaning of the text as opposed to defending or debunking various theories about the historicity of the book or particular events within it. For example, Durham doesn't get caught up in the debate about where the Red Sea was, or if this was a real historical event. He focuses on the meaning of that event for Israel, and the latter Christian community that would also consider the event apart of their faith heritage. Durham uses his own translation which provides a hosts of insights about the original language uses in the canon. This book will be a valuable resource for scholars who are searching for a reliable example of Canonical Criticism of Exodus. It will also be helpful for the pastor or Bible teacher who seeks greater theological understanding of Israel and her dramatic beginnings.

Fans of C.S. Lewis will recognize that Williams (coauthor with Josh McDowell of In Search of Certainty) is attempting a strange feat—explaining the deeper meaning in the Chronicles of Narnia books. Lewis was known to regard such efforts as usually counterproductive since analysis lacks the true power of storytelling, as Williams himself admits in his preface. He consequently urges people to read the stories on their own before taking up his book. While some of his commentary is unnecessary or obvious (e.g., Aslan's sacrifice as a parallel to Christ's crucifixion), other insights are more subtle (e.g., the wisdom about following God's will contained in The Silver Chair). For those less familiar with Lewis's other writings and life story, Williams provides some helpful explanatory quotations and background information. Exploring themes like prayer in the Chronicles, he gives both relevant biblical texts and theological discussion. His chapter on "Aslan's romps" contains some interesting observations about the discomfort many Christians feel with the very idea of pleasure. About the Author

Thomas Williams has written 14 books, both fiction and nonfiction, including three with Josh McDowell. He has ghostwritten another dozen books for several popular authors. Formerly the executive art director for Word Publishing, Tom has designed or illustrated more than 2,000 book covers and now serves as a creative consultant to several publishers. He and his wife, Faye, have three married daughters and eight grandchildren. They live in Granbury, Texas near Fort Worth.

An author who knows what he is talking about!

This is a great book delving into the deeper truths of God that are nestled into the pages of The Chronicles of Narnia. This authur is very indepth in his explanations of topics such as providence, prayer, creation, life after death, being created for pleasure, temptation, church, and faith...just to name a few. But he does it in a clear and easily understandable way that makes for an easy and enjoyable read.

I believe one of my favorite parts was the Chapter "Romping With The Lion". We are created for pleasure, for joy, for happiness. God made us to enjoy life and take pleasure in all things good! This chapter resonated with me and made me want to be a better "celebrator" and be able to express my joy, rather than just being stoic and pious.

Williams says the Chronicles are to be read for enjoyment, but this book really made me want to reread them while looking for the truths he brings out. This book gave me a thirst for more of Narnia!

You can tell the author has a love of all things Lewis and knows what he is talking about! I have been recommending this book to everyone!

With the upcoming movie release of the Walden Media/Walt Disney production of "Prince Caspian" I began searching for a book which would teach both literary analysis and apologetics to my junior-senior high students. After looking at several books I selected Thomas William's "The Heart of the Chroniciles of Narnia."
The book is divided into three themes: The Story of Narnia, Living Like a Narnian and The End and the Beginning, with an introduction, afterward and discussion questions. Williams explores the Chronicles of Narnia utilizing three principles:
1. Letting C.S. Lewis explain the stories himself, using references from his other writings that illuminate the meaning of the Narnian passages and confirm his thought on given concepts.
2. Confirming the many Narnian principles with biblical references.
3. Drawing on resources from other authors.
This is an excellant resource for those who want to "dig deeper" into the Chronicles of Narnia to discover the biblical meaning within the context of Lewis' celebrated stories.

His skill with words and deep understanding of spiritual truths combine to provide the reader with an in-depth, thought provoking,and satisfying reading experience. In "The Heart of Narnia", he shares his passion for the world of "Narnia" in a way that makes us all want to reread the entire Chronicles through "new eyes." This is a must-read for all!

The Great Woman Behind The Man

Married to internationally known Reverend Billy Graham, Ruth Bell Graham has a lot to say in her own right. She shares her voice in a poetic way within the pages of "Footprints Of A Pilgrim." And what a lovely voice it is - melodic, deep, intelligent, elegant and so insightful. I had never known Mrs. Graham possessed such creative talent. Her poems are amazing and are of varied human, nature and spiritual topics, always interesting.

The book itself is beautifully presented, loaded with pictures of the past of family and friends and annotated with brief glimpses into Mrs. Graham's life. It's almost like a shortened version of her interesting biography, showcasing her wonderful poetry throughout the years.

"Footprints Of A Pilgrim" is the type of book I keep in my library as it can be re-read a few years from now, appreciating in age.

a must-read for Ruth Graham admirers

As an admirer of Ruth Graham's life and character, I bought this book because I suspect it might be the last one she writes. It's a beautiful book, combining pictures from throughout her life with biography and poetry. I'm not a big fan of her poetry, so I tended to skim those sections. But the biographical portion offers a comprehensive look at her life from childhood in China to student days at Wheaton College to wife and mother. Her faith and wit shine through in vignettes contributed by her children and friends. We have a lot to learn from Mrs. Graham's generation, and this book will help to preserve her wisdom long after she's gone.

solid controls system book

This is a solid clearly written book including the fundamentals of control system and process measurement. It does not include many details concerning newer control system technologies.

I used this book to study for, take, and pass my Control System Professional Engineers Exam. It was the only text book I had.

Acceptable Introductory Text

This book covers more than the title states, which forces it toward a fairly general text. Basic engineering equations for instrumentation, valves, and flow devices are included, as are practice questions, but are often too simplified for actual applications. However, since all calcuations now days are done on a computer (often via a vendor) this text would serve quite well in an introductory process enginering course. The only serious problem I found was with regard to the computer software related sections where the equipment is dated. Then again, anyone wishing to write about computers and software should realize that their information will be antiquated by the time the book hits the shelf!

Buy the Old Version

This is the newer version of this text. The identical version was printed in the 1960's and is still sold on websites (such as amazon). The 1960's version is A LOT cheaper (like $2.00) as compared to what I paid for the reprinted 1990's version. It's the EXACT book with all the same questions only this one has a newer cover. The book itself is pretty good, although I only bought it for one of my cheg classes.
