As good as they come

While I agree with all the previous reviews, they just don't do justice to this beautiful collection, which is as perfect as they come. It is designed with the reader in mind, with fold out pages and a plastic spiral binding (more durable than it looks) that make pages easy to read and turn.

The book begins with an overview of the source manuscripts, how-tos of ornamentation, and information on the interpretation of the rhythms, including their relation to the dances they represent. This short introduction is concise and easy to understand, without being 'dumbed down'. The scores themselves are clear (though not always with enough room for my own scribbly notes), and have useful notes and commentaries on each piece that are extensive and unobtrusive to the score.

My favorite part of the book is it's strivings to keep close to the originals, offering alternatives and the interpretations of other musicians. The last 36 pages have photocopies of the source manuscripts, which are a bit too small to site read, but are an incredible asset to the material.

In short, his book is a totally awesome, completely user friendly, and overflowing with information, without being overly technical or dense. Thank you Mr. Koonce!

Excellent editing and format and useful scholarship

I am only a middling amateur player who has to work hard to learn any of these Bach pieces, but I know a fair amount about classical music. So far, I've been concentrating on the E-minor lute suite and it will take me year, I suspect. I find the performance notes interesting and useful. The page layout and binding are really excellent. In places where the original notes are impossible on the modern guitar, such as playing bass E and G# at the same time, he provides alternative inversions from which to choose. It's important to remember that no modern edit is holy writ, and if you want to go back to the originals or near-originals, facsimiles are provided. For me, these versions are certainly close enough.

The new standard

This is an excellent transcription of Bach for the classical guitar- the book is very well thought out, longer works like B.W.V 998 or paged together so it is very easy to read with no need for photocopies to get it all on a music stand. The book is also spriralbound so it won't fall apart and even includes a sizable preface to the style and practice of the music which it includes-all around good show! But these damn things are still imposiable to play!!!

About the Author
JUDY HALLIDAY is a registered nurse who has practiced for more than 25 years in the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Services, and Medical-Surgical, where she specialized in PSYCHIATRY. Halliday is the co-founder of Thin Within, an educational corporation designed to teach people to eat, think, and live the life of a thin person. She is the author of the best-seller Thin Within, and co-author of Thin Again, a biblical approach to dealing with the problem of overeating.

For 30 years DR. ARTHUR HALLIDAY worked in private practice in the area of Internal Medicine. Currently he serves as staff physician for addiction treatment at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Menlo Park, CA. Since 1984 he has lectured nationally from a Christian perspective about the epidemic of AIDS. In 1994 he co-wrote Silent Hunger, renamed Thin Again (Baker/Revel), with his wife, Judy Halliday, a registered R.N. and founder of the Thin Within educational corporation.

Freedom!

At 40 years of age, I have been on and off diets all of my life, and I am free from the bondage of "success/failure" from diets, now that I have learned to eat how my body was designed. Thin Within has been an "answered prayer" for me. I do not have to depend on any diet to work...My body works and I can depend on it. Thin Within has taught me how to think, believe and act like a thin person, which is how I was created. I want to say a big "Thank you!!" to Dr. Arthur and Judy Halliday and Heidi Bylsma for writing this book! I am now free!!

Finally, FREEDOM!

I am a yoga teacher/personal trainer so I'm in the business of helping people become fit and healthy. Even though I've had all the best diet and exercise advice at my disposal, and I LIKE to eat good food, and I exercise all the time, I still have struggled with my weight (mostly because of emotional eating). It was frustrating that I couldn't figure out why my clients weren't having long term success, even when I thought I was giving them all the help I possibly could. This was the missing piece of the puzzle!!! I wish I could go back and give this book to all my former clients. PLEASE buy this book, it has the answer for you. Pure Freedom! Beautiful Simplicity! Also, I think the majority of non-christians are not going to be offended by it's message.

The truth

I originally did the Weigh Down Workshop, was successful after a lot of trial and error, however, I soon realized that Gwen Shamblin's Weigh Down plan had veered of God's straight and narrow and she had followed after her own agenda, leaving me high and dry. Suddenly I remembered this Thin within thing a former WD coordinator had recommended so I ordered a copy of the book. I had lost 100 lbs on WD but had started gaining it back and was desperate. I thank God for Judy and Arthur Halliday. God's grace truly is amazing. Don't let anyone ever try to threaten you with hell. Jesus died for us while we were STILL sinners, not after we stopped. Obedience is what we do out of response to God's kindness, not out of fear and intimidation or obligaion like Weigh Down now would have you believe. Thin Within is the original weight loss program but Weigh Down would have you believe otherwise. As you will notice if you did WD in the 90s, original WD's plan in really Thin Within's.

An interesting, but stylistically flawed, survey text.

Although Mr. Garrison's text seems to be well-researched, it does not reflect the quality of workmanship one would expect of someone with his credentials. It reads more like a printed collection of notes intended to be used in preparation of a book than the intended finished product, especially the 2nd Edition of a prior publication.
While appearing to be well-researched, the text is filled with grammatical and stylistic errors such as incomplete sentences, improper punctuation, mixed metaphors, incoherent mixing of units of measure, unknown or undefined abbreviations, non sequiturs, and a host of other errors that would support several weeks of discussion in a college expository or technical writing course.
While I found the book generally informative, the frequency and nature of the stylistic problems makes for somewhat disjointed reading, and calls into question the quality of the underlying research. I would strongly suggest the publisher employ an editor, or at least a proofreader, and begin a 3rd Edition of this work. In its present form this edition is not a worthwhile addition to any serious engineering or history library, in my opinion.

Not your normal sex book...prepare to encounter God

Wow. Just moments ago I finished Meet Mr. Smith. Little did I know when I began reading it yesterday that just 24 hours later I would lay the book next to me and find myself a different person.

When the publisher gave Eric the go-ahead to write this book, Eric wanted it to be about Great Sex, since he and Leslie had been very blessed in this area during their 14 years of marriage. Little did he know that God had a different plan. Meet Mr. Smith turned out to be the story of God meeting Eric during the 12 weeks in which he was to write this book before its deadline. In these 12 weeks God taught Mr. Ludy in a new way the glorious building blocks of mystifyingly beautiful sex...

I had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning. The style that Eric chose to write from seemed a bit silly to me at first (a little bit allegorical). But quickly I realized that the revolutionary truths that were placed like jewels throughout the story *far* surpassed the sometimes silly storyline.

This is not your normal sex book. If you are looking for cheap tips or new ideas for the bedroom, buy some other book. But if you are willing to glimpse the face of Jesus Christ in a way you never have before, if you are willing to be taken into a place of enchantment and mystery and see all that our God really had in mind when He created sex...well then, read this book.

I have been married almost a year and am thankful for parents who taught me that sex is pure and beautiful, as well as a husband who truly loves me as Christ loves His bride. Yet, as I read this book, over and over again I was brought to tears of hunger and awe as I saw in a way I never have the epic love story that Yeshua of Nazereth desires each of us to live. It truly surpasses the beauty and valor of any movie or legend.

This book has not only revolutionized my heart in the area of sexual intimacy, but has hit on every area in life, and brought me into a place of deeper worship of the Bridegroom.

Incredible!!!

Wow! What a book! I love the way Eric and Leslie approch the subject of Sex and relationships in this book. It is like an alagory that brings the whole subject alive. It makes you realize just how messed up the world and a lot of Christians are when it comes to relationships and instant sex and pleasing themselves instead of finding out God's PERFECT plan for marriage and sex. This book is another hit!!! I love the truth and the purity of God that is throughout this book. All the glory goes to him!! Praise God that Eric and Leslie are getting this message out to people becuase GOD alone is the only one who can make you pure and whole and clean and He is waiting to do it too!!

Genius!

This has got to be not only my favorite Ludy book, but the most incredible reading experience I've ever encountered. I have read all of the christian dating books on the shelf and Meet Mr. Smith is definitely the most revolutionary. Eric Ludy has taken an approach to sexual purity that no other has taken. This unique, creative and God-inspired piece of literature is a true page turner and will revolutionize the way you think about God and romance. Beautifully written!! I recommend this book to EVERYONE. I buy copies of this book every time I can get my hand on them so I will have one on hand for when I have a friend that could use a great read on true romance. Keep up the wonderful literature Eric and Leslie!
