Word Biblical Commentary Vol., 14, 1 Chronicles (braun), 359pp, by Roddy L. Braun

The Old Testament book of Chronicles presents unique problems to students of the Bible. Here Dr. Roddy Braun takes a fresh look at the biblical text and sheds light upon its meaning for God's people in both Old Testament times and today. Taking careful note of Chronicles' dependency upon earlier Old Testament writings, he leads the serious Bible student through such issues as:

  • The relation of 1 Chronicles to parallel passages in Samuel and Kings
  • What "the Chronicler" intended to convey with his own independent contributions to Israel's history and theology
  • The role of Solomon's temple as a uniting force for the Chronicler, who faced the reality of the division between Israel in the north and Judah in the south
  • The book's emphasis upon God's covenant with David as reaching its goal in the construction of the temple.

Dr. Braun investigates thoroughly the effect of God's covenant with David in this important part of Scripture. Did the tragic division of the kingdom following Solomon's death mean God had forsaken the covenant? Were the northern tribes too a part of that "all Israel" that was being summoned to return to faithful observance of the priestly services at Solomon's temple in Jerusalem? What was the meaning of such a summons at the time of the Exile, when both Israel and Judah lay in ruins? Such questions are explored with an expert's eye to history and background, theology, and textual considerations.

The author-with his remarkable combination of scholarly insights and pastoral experience-also notes the themes of unity, joy, and generosity in worship emphasized by the Chronicler. He was apparently anxious not simply to reunite the kingdom, but also to restore spiritual depth and enthusiastic support to worship-issues that continue to be vital to the people of God today.

Scholarly but accessible commentary
By Doug Erlandson
I've always felt that writing a commentary on 1 Chronicles would be difficult, not just because of the chapter after chapter devoted to the genealogies, but also because of some of the questions that anyone with a degree of biblical literacy is going to raise. For instance, why does the author of think that the assignments of the musicians and other Levites is important? Why does he ignore David's sin with Bathsheba and the consequences thereof? And why, on the other hand, having ignored the Bathsheba matter, does the Chronicler include the story of numbering the fighting man, which also incurred God's wrath? Roddy Braun, in this excellent commentary, answers this and other questions, including the question of the authorship of the Chronicles in relation to Ezra-Nehemiah. Although I tend to disagree with his conclusion, Braun presents a strong case for these books not being the work of the same author.

This is a scholarly commentary. However, it's clearly enough explained (with Hebrew terms translated into English) that it's also accessible to the layperson.

Difficult assignment
By Doug Erlandson
For quite some time I've thought that one of the most difficult assignments for an Old Testament scholar is writing a commentary on 1 Chronicles. When Roddy Braun's commentary of this book came to my attention I was curious to see how he would handle this book. Would he pay adequate attention to the genealogical section, knowing that for many readers these genealogies are simply passed over? Would he examine in depth the chapters that deal with the assignments of the musicians and the other Levites and would he show why the Chronicler regarded these as important? Would he adequately explain why it is that the Chronicler omitted a significant part of the reign of David that is found in 1 Kings and why those parts omitted generally deal with the turmoil in David's reign that resulted from his sin with Bathsheba (an event not mentioned by the Chronicler)? And why, on the other hand, the Chronicler includes the numbering of the fighting men, despite the fact that David did this in disobedience to God?

The answer to all these questions is a resounding "Yes." But there is far more to this commentary than an in-depth discussion of those questions. The introductory material in particular is valuable as Braun discusses the authorship of the Chronicles, taking the position that has become more widespread among scholars––namely, that the author is someone other than the author of Ezra-Nehemiah.

This commentary is first and foremost a work of serious scholarship and hence is best suited for the serious OT student. However, it is clearly enough written that the layperson who wants an explanation of a particular passage can benefit.

Thorough commentary
By Doug Erlandson
The book of 1 Chronicles raises a number of interesting questions with which the author of a commentary must wrestle. For example: Why exactly does the Chronicler regard the assignments of the musicians and other Levites as important? And why does he omit a significant part of the reign of David as recorded in 1 Kings and why in particular has he omitted most parts that deal with the turmoil in David's reign that resulted from his sin with Bathsheba (something passed over in its entirety by the Chronicler)? And, on the other hand, why does the Chronicler include the story of the numbering of the fighting men, even though this also displays David's disobedience to God?

All these issues and many others are more than adequately handled by Roddy Braun's commentary on 1 Chronicles in the Word Biblical Commentary series, as are issues such as the authorship of the book (which Braun believes to be someone other than the author of Ezra-Nehemiah). As a commentary on the text itself, it is a work of serious scholarship, but it is one that is accessible to the layperson.
