Kids will love it and so will parents!

This is one of the best Bible story books I have ever used. I had a copy for my children and both of them loved it -- in fact, I have saved a copy for each of them to have if they ever have children. Since they were grown, I've used it to help teach Bible classes and have given many as gifts to new babies. The illustrations are realistic rather than cartoonish (which I think is important as you stress the reality of the stories)and the text is simple but true to the original. I heartily recommend this book, especially for small children and beginning readers.

Great art and accurate translations

This is the best children's Bible I have seen. My 7 year old grandson can hardly put it down. The pictures are very realistic without adding imaginary content as most kids' bibles do. The text paraphrases the stories fairly accurately - without watering down the truth of each story. Adults can add spiritual concepts to the simple stories presented.

I will buy more for the young children I know.

Great for Band classes. Compatible with the original version.

Purchased this for my middle-schooler who is in Band, so he wouldn't have to use the raggedy used copies that the school has. This version is the "enhanced" version of the original book. I'm not sure whats different, as I haven't noticed anything different from this version and the original version that our school uses except that this version seems to come with two CD's. My son is able to use this enhanced version just fine even though his Band class uses the original version.

Based upon my grand-daughter's word,I have found that her music reading skills, dormant for a little while, have come back; and, she now enjoys playing in her High School band with her peers. I find this Comprehensive band method has helped her significantly along with her teacher who suggested it.

This book is very helpful for beginners who are attempting to learn how to play an instrument. It has classic songs and Christmas song which are fun to learn with the season approaching. In the beginning of the book there are helpful hints to keep you hand coordination.

A Dissapointing Read - The mystic is too mystic

I realize that being the first person to criticize Larry Crabb I could be labeled unspiritual and certainly not valuing Christian Community. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am involved with a close knit group of believers in a thriving Christian community. I've studied the word for a few years now so I was familiar with some of Crabb's concepts especially community and its power to promote spiritual growth. Crabb's concept of "upper and lower" rooms have been more commonly referred to as eternal and temporal or God and Flesh.
My biggest complaint is that I felt Crabb made these concepts a lot more difficult and out of reach on the ideal level than they needed to be. If I were a new believer reading this book I would be completely paranoid and develop spiritual paralysis. Crabb asserts that anytime a thought enters our mind about "am I hurt?" or "do I need to self protect?" that we are operating out of the lower room. In actuality those thoughts are merely a product of our fallen state and the only time we fall into sin would be if we focus and dwell on these things instead of what God is calling on us to do.
Crabb also asserts that there are no psychological problems only spiritual. I absolutely disagree with this from a clinical standpoint although some people certainly have spiritual issues mixed in.
Crabb also has no category for obeying the word if your heart is not behind it. This is something I can't understand because one way we trust God is to follow Him when sometimes we don't understand why. Crabb also complained that questions such as "What does the Bible say I should do?" and "How can I love my husband well?" are managerial (legalistic). I completely disagree. I think these are great questions a growing Christian could be asking.
For the sake of brevity I'll save my other complaints and just say that I do think Crabb had good intent and wanted to persuade against legalism and encourage us to focus on the eternal rather than temporal. However, I think he got so caught up in his "mysticism" as he calls it that his writing was obscure and not culturally relevant.

Get the book instead!

The message itself is excellent: a call to the church to foster spiritual community in a radical way.

Unfortunately, Dr. Larry Crabb reads his own book. He is extremely bad at presenting the message, and reading in general, and he made it very difficult to understand his point. My friend has a copy of the paperback, and I love the book itself. Crabb is just so bad at using tonal inflections, vocal volume, and many other good reading habits that he broke my ability to focus on the message and had me frustrated with him.

Please, purchase the hard or softcover instead.

Amy Hollingsworth is the author of the best-selling The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers and Gifts of Passage. Before writing books, Amy wrote for various magazines and was a television writer for eight years for CBN. In 2010, she was named one of USA Today’s Top 100 People for her influence on pop culture and was featured in the documentary by MTV’s Benjamin Wagner titled Mister Rogers & Me. Her television appearances include WGN’s Morning News, PBS’s A Word on Words, and Fox’s Morning News. A former psychology professor, Amy lives in Virginia with her husband and children.

An insightful, touching view of a humble and spiritual man

When Amy Hollingsworth scored a rare interview with Fred Rogers in 1994, it began a relationship of letters and phone calls between the two that spanned eight years, lasting until three weeks before his death in 2003. It culminates in this compelling inspirational book, THE SIMPLE FAITH OF MISTER ROGERS: Spiritual Insights from the World's Most Beloved Neighbor.

Using the analogy of "toast sticks," a treat Rogers cited as a milestone in his childhood, Hollingsworth gathers up the "spiritual toast sticks" Rogers bequeathed to her --- toast sticks of the heart (inner disciplines), for the eyes (seeing others), and for the hands (using practical things we've learned). She adeptly weaves snippets of her own life throughout, exemplifying the influence Rogers had on her life.

Hollingsworth paints a portrait of a disciplined, contemplative man of deep faith ordained by the United Presbyterian Church as an evangelist with a unique charge to serve children and families through television. And rather than conform to what passed for quality children's programming, he determined to chart his own course. "I'm so convinced that the space between the television set and the viewer is holy ground," he told Hollingsworth.

There was no frantic Sesame Street action in "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood." Each of the 900 episodes opened with a traffic light flashing in yellow. Slow down, was the message. Take time. "And so, for me, being quiet and slow is being myself, and that is my gift," Rogers told Hollingsworth. "Sometimes slow is better: in understanding, in learning to be patient, in 'going deeper' spiritually," observes Hollingsworth, a self-confessed Type A, hyperactive person.

Rogers also used the unlikely medium of television to teach about silence. Hollingsworth relates the story of cellist Yo-Yo Ma playing a composition on the show and Rogers telling children: "Let's take some quiet time to remember, to sit and think about what we've heard." And he did. Silence, Hollingsworth says, wasn't dead air to Rogers --- it was thanking the God who inspires and informs all that is nourishing and good. "Fred may have considered silence his most important legacy."

Right next to feelings, that is. Rogers referred to himself as an "emotional archaeologist," Hollingsworth writes, wanting to get to the root of what motivates people. As a child, he was overweight and teased by bullies. He wanted someone to tell him it was okay to feel bad. As an adult, he encouraged children to open up about their feelings through setting an example of vulnerability on the show himself. His plea for public television as a venue for teaching about feelings helped him sway the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Communications to come through on a $20 million grant for the medium in 1969.

"It's one of the most important parts of the Neighborhood, knowing that feelings are all right. You know, that you don't have to hide them and that there are ways that you can say how you feel that aren't going to hurt you or anybody else. If there were a legacy that I would hope for the Neighborhood passing on, that's certainly one of them."

Rogers, Hollingsworth shows, carefully structured his life. He rose every morning at 5 a.m. for prayer. He swam at 7:30 a.m. (after singing "Jubilate Deo" out loud, a song taught to him by his mentor Henri Nouwen), worked, then went to bed at 9:30 p.m. He ate no meat and drank no alcohol. "It isn't difficult to see why a man with this level of discipline would be able to cultivate an interior life that would inspire awe in others," writes Hollingsworth.

His spirit was contagious. He once quieted five thousand rowdy Boston University graduates at commencement by inviting them to sing, "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood." He befriended inmates he taught in a maximum-security prison. "Love Boat" star Lauren Tewes credits his show with giving her the strength to kick her cocaine habit. He inspired song lyrics.

Hollingsworth emphasizes Rogers's humility. (Can you say "humble"? Sure you can.) "I don't think of myself as somebody who's famous. I'm just a neighbor who comes and visits children; (I) happen to be on television. But I've always been myself. I never took a course in acting. I just figured that the best gift you could offer anybody is your honest self, and that's what I've done for lots of years. And thanks for accepting me exactly as I am."

Tear Jerker, Warm Fuzzies, Life Afirming,

Simply Marvelous.

If you grew up watching Mister Rogers and felt that his life made yours better, then you already knew that his faith, though quiet, was the animating principle behind his ability to connect with others. I cried several times in reading this book. The writer really captured his spirit through the pages.

For fans of Mister Rogers and people that long for a kinder, gentler version of Christianity than what we see sold in America today. We could all stand to be nicer and a better neighbor to our fellow man. Mister Rogers simply pointed the way to a life of service and love, bound together by faith in the Almighty creator of the world, who taught us how to love.

I was given this book by my sister and reluctantly began to read it, here and there. However, certain life events have made me take pause, and I now incorporate a daily reading (in order) along with my other meditations: both secular and religious. The Bible verses, along with stories, chapter headings, and the women themselves, are such a breath of fresh air. An irrepressible hope.

Extremely Helpful for Couples

I am a psychologist and marriage therapist and I wish everyone who is in an intimate relatiionship would read this book. Dr. May has an excellent grasp of how to help couples get unstuck and create a secure attachment. She has an expert knowledge of Emotionally Focused Marital Therapy (EFT) and can apply it in easy to understand ways. Congratulations Dr. May! Job well done.

This book was extremely helpful in allowing my spouse and I to look internally and know that a lot of issues are due to past experiences and are not actually about what is happening here and now. I learned it is not about changing your spouse, it's about understanding yourself.

But in this commentary Dr. John Hartley perceives that the message of Leviticus—the significance of pure worship and holy living—is also the heart of vital faith in any age. Amid the prescriptions for sacrifice and ritual to be observed by Israel in the wilderness, the author finds useful observations for the people of God today.

The emphasis of Leviticus on true worship, and on ordering the ethical life according to the will of Yahweh instead of idols, was at the heart of Israel’s raison d’etre, Dr. Hartley notes. Viewed in this light, such prescriptions as the “Holiness Code” (chapters 17-26) are far more than a list of ritual observances; they are Israel’s response to God’s charge to “be holy, for I, Yahweh, your God, am holy.”

Leviticus’ focus on the Aaronic priesthood also receives special attention in this treatment. The Levites are the designated communicators charged with transmitting God’s law through Moses—indeed, the purpose of the book “to preserve divine sermons for the instruction of the congregation in cultic and ethical matters.” Yet, despite their insistence on correct form and content in worship, the Levites do not become authoritarian protectors of a secret code in the manner of pagan priests. Since the formulas were proclaimed to the congregation, they became an informed laity exerting a balancing dynamic on the priests as well as receiving ministry from them.

The author’s sensitivity to theological concern makes this commentary useful in expository preaching. his introduction includes essays on the themes of holiness, God’s presence, the covenant, sacrifice, and the relation of Leviticus to the New Testament.

On the widely disputed question of authorship Dr. Hartley affirms the text’s claim that “Yahweh spoke to Moses . . .” and that Leviticus helped shape the nation’s worship and life instead of merely reflecting existing practices. Yet he also acknowledges the evidence that some of the material shows the community’s dynamic interpretation of how God’s word through Moses was to be applied in their daily lives. This two-edged sword of loyalty to the text and to the community’s life makes the commentary useful in “discovering ways that contemporary communities of faith may be shaped and empowered by the received Word of God.”

About the Author

John E. Hartley is Professor of Old Testament and Chair of the Department of Biblical Studies in the C.P. Haggard School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University. A graduate of Greenville College and Asbury Theological Seminary, he holds the M.A. and Ph.D. from Brandeis University. Post-doctoral studies have been pursued at Harvard Divinity School and in Jerusalem. He is the author of the Book of Job in the series The New International Commentary on the Old Testament. He was co-editor of the five-volume series Wesleyan Theological Perspectives, authoring three articles for this series. He has also contributed to major works, including the International Standard Bible encyclopedia revised.  He is an ordained elder in the Free Methodist church.

Helpful and Thorough

Hartley does a great job with structure and background. I had hoped to see a bit more interaction with the actual grammar although he does a very good job interacting with semantic and lexical questions. He also does well tracing larger Biblical Theological motifs. I recommend this volume highly.

This is a good modern day commentary. It has a depth I find lacking in most modern commentaries. I have been exposed to many older works no longer in print that truly educate the reader. The works in this series have this type of depth.
